The Blue Morpho is one of the most famous and recognizable butterflies in the world. Many people are surprised to learn that when its wings are closed, it looks completely different. In fact, I suspect a lot of visitors mistake the underside of the Blue Morpho for a moth. The lower side of its wings resembles a cecropia moth, one of North America’s giant silk moths, while the upper side flashes an incredible, iridescent blue that seems to glow in the light.

I recently joined the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster. After several visits, I realized I was spending more on individual admissions than the cost of a membership, so joining was an easy decision. It’s a terrific value, especially if you enjoy photography or simply love butterflies and nature.

Getting there is easy. Take Highway 36 past the Lafayette/Highway 287 exit and continue north. Take the first right, and you’ll find the Butterfly Pavilion on your left. And if you happen to miss a turn, don’t worry—your phone’s GPS will get you there.

One of the things I love most about the pavilion is that it is home to roughly 1,300 free-flying butterflies at any given time. Every visit offers something new, whether it’s a Blue Morpho gliding overhead or a colorful tropical species landing just a few feet away.
