Faces of Boulder: Grape Escapes and Perfect Plates With Wine

Alexandrea smiling behind the counter at Public Wine

Alesandrea is one of those rare finds that turns a trip to the wine store into something special. Hidden in plain sight at Public Wine in Lafayette, she brings a warm welcome that feels less like a transaction and more like a connection.

It all starts simply. A smile, a genuine greeting, and the sense that she’s glad you walked through the door. That small gesture sets the tone, but it doesn’t stop there. Within moments she shifts from hello to curiosity—what’s for lunch, what’s for dinner, what mood are you in?

Before I knew it, she was suggesting a pairing for both meals. Not the usual suspects either. These weren’t the standard “chicken goes with white, steak goes with red” suggestions. Instead, she reached deeper into the shelves, pulling bottles I might never have considered. Each pairing was unusual, creative, and to my delight—spot on. Alexandrea drew on the library of reasonably priced wines for her (I thought) unusual ideas for pairings. She of course asked me how I planned on preparing each entree.

Lunch was elevated, dinner transformed. The wines she chose didn’t just match the food, they enhanced it. Each sip pulled out flavors I hadn’t noticed before. That’s the art of a great pairing—it’s not about showing off the wine, but about creating harmony between glass and plate.

What makes Alesandrea a hidden gem is not only her knowledge, but her instinct. Anyone can memorize tasting notes; she listens, she senses, and then she matches. That’s a gift, and it’s what makes Public Wine more than just a shop.

So next time you’re wandering down Public Road in Lafayette, stop in. Let Alesandrea guide you. You’ll leave not just with a bottle, but with an experience that lingers long after the cork is pulled.

Hidden gems like this don’t stay hidden forever.

Shared knowledge is power!
