Leading from Within: The Daily Work of Leadership

The morning light hits, another day begins. Before the world pulls you into its momentum, you sit with yourself. Maybe you woke up feeling clear and ready. Maybe you’re managing the weight of the day before it even starts. Either way, here you are, and the choice is yours—how will you show up?

You’re doing the best you can with what you’ve got. That simple truth is easy to forget when life feels overwhelming, spinning at 1,000 miles per hour. A leader of a world-class company fights depression behind closed doors. A solopreneur wonders if her negative thinking is leading her off track. A C-suite executive battles his inner critic after getting hurt on the court. An HR director struggles with anger because no one seems to be doing it right. Each of them, in their own way, is doing the best they can. And so are you.

The real shift happens when you realize this: change happens in real time. You can disrupt the patterns that don’t serve you at any moment. The overwhelm, the doubt, the frustration—these don’t have to dictate your choices. You can pause. Breathe. Choose something different.

I wake up in Boulder, so blessed to be a part of this ecosystem of friends, family, clients, and the elements. This morning, I woke up heavy with thoughts, managing negativity. But I got on my indoor bike and pedaled my way to freedom from my Judge—judging what’s going on in the world, judging others’ decisions, judging myself for being negative. That’s the Boulder promise. If you want to ‘do better’ and ‘be better,’ Boulder makes it easy with its offers for peace in nature and healthy routines all around.

Boulder sunshine, fresh air, and a love that keeps growing.

Leadership is one of those words that’s been overused to the point of cliché. It gets thrown around in corporate mission statements and motivational speeches, but real leadership isn’t just about running a team or a company. It’s about leading yourself. It’s about the moment-to-moment choices you make—positive or negative, purposeful or reactive—that define how you move through life and influence those around you.

Showing up as a leader means embracing the fact that you always have a choice. You can choose to approach a stressful situation with patience instead of frustration. You can choose to meet challenges with curiosity instead of resistance. You can choose to respond with kindness instead of criticism.

That’s the internal work of leadership—aligning with your values and getting clear on what matters most. When you do that, you don’t just lead yourself better—you become someone others want to follow.

What Does It Mean to Align with Your Values?

Your values are your internal compass. They guide your decisions, shape your actions, and define what truly matters to you. Aligning with your values means making choices that are consistent with what you care about most. It’s about ensuring that your actions and priorities reflect who you are at your core.

So what do you care about? If you value impact, you strive to make a meaningful difference in everything you do. You choose to contribute, influence, and create change rather than simply going through the motions. If you value security, your decisions are grounded in stability, making sure your environment—whether financial, emotional, or physical—feels safe and reliable. If passion drives you, you chase opportunities that excite and energize you rather than settling for what’s comfortable or expected.

Your values are your true north—when you align with them, leadership becomes effortless. Grab this free resource I created long ago that stands the test of time so you can uncover what truly drives you and start leading from a place of clarity and power.

Values Clarification and Mission Statement

“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.” – Carl Jung

When you get clear on your values, navigating challenges and making decisions becomes easier. When your actions align with what truly matters to you, you experience a deeper sense of fulfillment and purpose. When they don’t, you feel resistance, frustration, or even burnout.

Your compass guiding every choice you make

And here’s the thing: you don’t always have to lead. Sometimes, it feels damn good to be led. To trust someone else to steer the ship, especially in moments where decisions feel exhausting. Choosing when to lead and when to follow is part of the rhythm of life, and when it aligns with your values, it just makes sense. There’s power in knowing when to step up and when to step back.

So here you are, at the start of the day. Before diving into the external noise, take a moment. Be with your feelings. Process what’s possible for you. What’s one thing you can shift today to improve the overall quality of your life? Leadership begins with how you show up for yourself. When you do that, you show up better for others.

Change or Chance? The choice is yours.

The only real control you have is over how you show up. And at any moment, you can shift. You can disrupt old patterns, choose a new path, and create real-time change. So, choose purpose. Choose kindness. Choose calm. Wake up. Lead. Win.
