Smokey Sunset Sensation in Boulder: Beauty in the Beast!

The smokey Boulder air has as a collateral consequence a beautiful sunset.

Longs Peak, different at every viewing, was striking as always! The sunset was serene and spectacular.

To get these pics I had to pull onto the shoulder of Hwy 287 between Lafayette and Boulder, Northbound. Too far to the left and I would have been playing in traffic. Too far to the right and I would have driven off the shoulder into a two foot sharp drop. Debi was riding shotgun and happily did not scream in panic. I’m not sure I would have been as calm. Thanks Dear!!! I had given her a heads-up that I was  going to pull onto the shoulder, and I waited until there was a large break in traffic so that no one had to brake or even much notice me pulling to the side of the highway. To pull over with true safety I did lose a little of the best of the light.

I pulled over and lowered my driver’s window. My phone provided all the camera I needed (as it often does). I snapped as many pics as I could during a very brief stop. The lighting was changing moment by moment, and the longer I was pulled over the more uncomfortable I was, as I should have been. I took the pics, and when it was way clear I pulled back onto the highway and accelerated rapidly even though no cars were coming. I love the layering effect of the hills. I’ve discovered that the tops of each ridge can be lighter OR darker than the hill underneath. The effect of depth works just fine with either dark OR light on the top. Very weird IMO (in my opinion). I was pulled over for less than a minute. By the time I was on the road again the lighting had changed enough so that all of the reddish smokey color had faded into the oncoming dusk.
