Often in films, we see people devastated by grief. A little later, we see the same people heroically pull themselves together and get on with it. Not everyone responds that way. Grief is overwhelming, and I know a little something about that. When I was in college, my father died quite suddenly from a heart attack. A month later, Alzheimer’s finally took my grandmother. After that, things like going …

Boulder birds or birds elsewhere, I love pics of them "looking" straight at me. But are they really looking at me? Perhaps not! Meet GW — a small, gentle soul with a quiet charm and a surprisingly brave heart. Slightly frail in appearance but strong in spirit, GW represents something many Boulder dog lovers understand well: you don’t have to be big to belong in a big outdoor town. Dan Frieling, my bro, pointed out to me that advertising pictures almost universally show someone holding a camera in what I call the "bird wing" stance. Their elbows are sticking out each side like the wings of a bird. It is probably impossible to hold a camera steady in this position. It is also uncomfortable, and muscle-straining.  Instead, hold the camera like you'd hold a rifle with your shutter finger/arm in a "wing" position and your other elbow against your chest, hand under the lens. This position is comfortable and well-braced. While I am a huge fan of the cameras in phones, …
