Colorado Ranks 17th Best State in America, No. 1 in Education

Colorado has received its annual report card from U.S. News & World Report, and while the state slipped in the overall rankings, it earned one of the nation’s highest honors.

In the 2026 Best States rankings, Colorado placed No. 17 overall, down from No. 11 in 2025. The biggest headline, however, is that Colorado ranked No. 1 in education, reinforcing its reputation as one of the country’s best places to learn, innovate, and build a career.

Utah claimed the top overall ranking for the fourth consecutive year, followed by South Dakota, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Nebraska. Louisiana ranked last.

How the Rankings Work

The annual Best States rankings evaluate all 50 states using dozens of measures across eight major categories:

  • Education
  • Health Care
  • Economy
  • Infrastructure
  • Opportunity
  • Fiscal Stability
  • Natural Environment
  • Crime & Corrections

Education and health care carry the greatest weight in determining each state’s overall ranking.

Colorado’s category rankings were:

  • Education: No. 1
  • Economy: No. 9
  • Health Care: No. 10
  • Infrastructure: No. 10
  • Natural Environment: No. 22
  • Opportunity: No. 39
  • Fiscal Stability: No. 45
  • Crime & Corrections: No. 47

Colorado Leads the Nation in Education

Colorado’s top-ranked education system is the state’s biggest accomplishment this year.

Strong performances in higher education, educational attainment, preschool enrollment, and K-12 outcomes helped propel Colorado to the top of the rankings. The state’s investment in universal preschool has also strengthened its education profile.

For Boulder, the ranking hits especially close to home. Home to the University of Colorado Boulder, one of the nation’s premier public research universities, the city continues to benefit from a highly educated workforce, groundbreaking research, and a thriving culture of innovation. Those strengths help attract businesses, entrepreneurs, students, and talented professionals from around the world.

Colorado’s Strengths

Beyond education, Colorado continues to perform well in several key areas.

The state ranked No. 9 for its economy, reflecting a strong business climate, steady job growth, and a diverse economy. Health care also earned high marks, while infrastructure finished in the nation’s top ten thanks to continued investment and strong internet connectivity.

These rankings reflect many of the qualities that make Boulder attractive: economic opportunity, access to quality medical care, and a well-educated population.

Areas That Need Improvement

The report also highlights several ongoing challenges.

Colorado ranked 39th in opportunity, largely because of affordability concerns. Housing prices and the rising cost of living continue to affect families across the state, particularly in communities like Boulder.

Fiscal stability ranked 45th, while Crime & Corrections came in at 47th, indicating continued concerns about public safety and long-term budget pressures.

Colorado’s Natural Environment ranked 22nd. While the state is famous for its mountains, parks, and outdoor recreation, the rankings also consider factors such as air quality, water quality, and environmental conditions that have been affected by wildfire smoke, ozone, drought, and continued Front Range growth.

What It Means for Boulder

No statewide ranking can fully capture what makes Boulder special.

Residents enjoy quick access to hiking trails, open space, cycling routes, a vibrant downtown, and one of the nation’s leading public universities. At the same time, the report reflects many of the conversations taking place locally about housing affordability, public safety, and managing growth while preserving Boulder’s exceptional quality of life.

Colorado’s No. 1 ranking in education is something to celebrate and remains one of the state’s greatest competitive advantages. At the same time, lower rankings in affordability, fiscal stability, and public safety show there is still important work ahead.

Overall, the 2026 Best States rankings paint a picture of a state that continues to excel in education, innovation, and economic opportunity while working to address the challenges that come with rapid growth. For Boulder, that balance between opportunity and livability will continue to shape the community’s future.
