What Classifies a Craft Brew?

October 27th, 2017

“What makes a craft brew, a craft brew?” I innocently asked. The man looked at me, as if I were still in high school, barely old enough to drink a soda, let alone a beer. He replied, with a perplexed look on his face, “As long as you produce less beer than Sam Adams, you’re considered a craft brewery.” I thought to myself, “Seriously?” Now, I don’t recall where I was (it was one of those nights), but I was speaking to a Boulder beer aficionado, or so I thought. This idea of what classifies a craft brew slipped my mind, until a recent argument over... Read More

A Brief History of the Beer Boot

October 6th, 2017

Drinking beer is not the only thing I do, so the other day, I decided to go on a lovely jaunt through downtown Boulder. Where was I walking, do you ask? To the Bohemian Biergarten, of course! I was on a quest to discover the history behind the beloved beer boot, or Das Boot, as many of us fondly refer to it. I arrived at my destination, but to my disappointment, their Bavarian chef, Martin König, was away, and my question could not be answered. I actually think my curiosity may have sparked the same questioning surrounding Das Boot in others. Anyways, I am not the most patient person, so instead... Read More

Boulder Beer: Bold Since 1979

September 15th, 2017

Founded in 1979, on a farm just northeast of town, Boulder Beer has come a long way since it planted its roots in the Boulder Valley 38 years ago. As Colorado’s First Craft Brewery, Boulder Beer quickly took off, giving beer lovers an extraordinary change. After expanding their product, the brewmasters realized that they needed to expand their space as well, moving to the Pub on Wilderness Place in 1994. There are now two Boulder Beer locations – the one on Wilderness Place, and the other just off the Pearl Street Mall on Walnut. The Pub on Wilderness has to be my favorite location,... Read More

Grab a Brew & View Mayweather vs. McGregor

August 25th, 2017

Throw back some brews and get pumped up for the big fight this Saturday night! We all know what I’m talking about – Conor McGregor v.s. Floyd Mayweather. It’s a boxing match for the ages that we’re all anxiously awaiting to see. Who will win? Mayweather, the undefeated longtime pro-boxer, or McGregor, the Irish charmer/MMA master? I guess we’ll have to wait and see; but where is a fan to watch the Mayweather/McGregor showdown in Boulder? Well, after spending tedious amounts of time calling the most prominent bars in Boulder, I realized the hard way, that watching boxing fights is just... Read More

Saying Goodbye to Walnut Brewery

May 12th, 2017

A well-loved brewpub in downtown Boulder, Walnut Brewery, announced Thursday that they will be closing their doors on June 4th after 27 years of business. Where Boulder Beer Co. gets to claim its place as Boulder’s first brewery, Walnut Brewery was Boulder’s first brewpub; a contribution that I, for one, greatly appreciate. If you haven’t (or even if you have) had their chicken friend chicken n’ waffles, I highly suggest giving it a try with the Buffalo Gold ale. The current owners of Walnut Brewery report that ownership of the brewery will transfer to Frank Day, owner of the Boulderado... Read More

St. Paddy’s Day is for Beer Drinking

March 17th, 2017

The day has finally arrived! The day that we beer drinkers look forward to all year long. The day that everyone can come together in a sea of green and sing odes to the old country (even if they have only seen pictures of the Cliffs of Moher). This St. Patrick’s Day, don your most festive Irish green getup and, after finishing your annual green Coors Light, check out one of the many events happening today featuring beers from local breweries all over Boulder. To give us an idea of where to start, I looked in a few of them. To start the evening off, head over the Avery Brewing for their St. Paddy’s... Read More

How to Approach the Beer Scene in Boulder!

March 5th, 2016

Love beer but also kind of a beer amateur? Perfect, me too! And what greater place is there to live as a beer amateur, thirsty for more, than Boulder, Colorado? It’s beyond a doubt that Boulder is a Craft Brew Mecca. It seems that every week there is a new microbrewery to discover and a spot up at the bar to steal. But do we all take advantage of the numerous breweries available to us? Let’s talk about your next weekend plans, beer freaks and beer amateurs alike.   First off, I think it’s important to consider one simple fact and that is, craft beer is for enjoying not chugging. You... Read More
