Confessions of A Movie-Loving Budtender

March 22nd, 2023

My first recommendation is The Matrix, because it literally changed the film world and spawned tons of rip-offs for years after it was made. I also believe this movie is meant to be watched while high, the blu-ray should come with a pre-rolled joint. The Matrix is a futuristic sci-fi film about a hacker who can jump between two realities. Even twenty years later the movie still looks better than most of the new films coming out. Not only are the visuals and the story cool, nothing is funnier than about halfway through the movie when Keanu Reeves’ character Neo watches Morpheus jump across a building... Read More

You Can’t Make This Stuff Up! Cannabis tales to share…

January 14th, 2023

It’s true, you can’t make this stuff up! The cannabis culture is colorful and full of interesting facts and fallacies. Here are a few facts that may tickle your funny bone or leave you scratching your head in confusion. Pot for Sale Online in 1971. The very first online purchase was an undisclosed amount of marijuana between students at two prestigious colleges.  In the early 70’s,  long before eBay and Amazon, students at Stanford University using Arpanet accounts at Stanford University’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, engaged in a commercial transaction with their buddies... Read More

Confession of a Boulder Budtender

December 8th, 2022

This week I was criticized by a reader for not offering a true “confession” like the title of this blog suggests. Alright I have a reader! The thing is though, there is not much to expose about being a budtender. There are no secrets that need uncovering, no whistleblowing that needs doing, and no oppressive leader that needs toppling. I am not an investigative journalist up here to call out the weed industry for their abuses of power, I am just a dude who works in a weed shop. “Breaking News! Nobody likes strains that are low in THC, more on this story next week”. I like to make fun of... Read More

Ridin’ High?

May 14th, 2022

When we talk about policy changes regarding legalization of marijuana, there are always people that immediately go into “reefer-madness-code-red-alert!” mode out of concern for driver safety. Telling them to take a hit and calm down goes over like a lead balloon. So instead, let’s talk facts and be reasonable. Marijuana is less dangerous than alcohol and, like alcohol, the deterrent effect of a DUI arrest applies. In the first large-scale controlled study of drug and alcohol crash risk by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there is no significant increased crash risk associated... Read More

Cannabis Is Not Alcohol

April 22nd, 2022

As the budtender, I get in a lot of conversations about why cannabis should be legal. One common argument made is that cannabis should be legal because alcohol is legal. To start with, marijuana should not be legal just because another thing is legal. Marijuana, oops I mean cannabis, should be legal because it is a benefit for humans. We all understand why this argument gets made though, alcohol and cannabis are both substances that get you a little impaired and can affect your judgment. In our society, they are two of our social norms for changing the mindset and relaxing, but they are very different... Read More

Cannabis, Stress, and Mental Health

August 28th, 2020

Having recently made a personal commitment to achieve a better work life balance, I find myself feeling encouraged to talk about stress, mental health, and even share a bit about my own life’s stressors. Mental health is very important, and the stress of life’s bountiful challenges can take a toll on it very quickly. Gary Vaynerchuk is quoted as saying, “Everybody has shit”, and he’s right. We all have our own shit in our lives we have to deal with. It can often be easy to get caught up in it, to the point you may not consider other people are going through their own shit, so keep that... Read More

Good People Smoke Weed Too

August 13th, 2020

Recently we had our new Attorney General tell us that “good people don’t smoke weed”. That was an ignorant statement made by the man put in charge of this country’s legal affairs and law enforcement. Are you one of these “people”? I am! But…I am a law-abiding citizen, I pay my taxes, I am friendly with my neighbors, and I do not cut people off in traffic, intentionally. I thought I was a pretty decent guy? Half of this country has already updated their laws to legalize marijuana for medicinal or recreational purposes. According to two Gallup polls from 2016, over sixty percent of... Read More

What People Over 55 Should Know About Marijuana and Healthcare

July 5th, 2020

Are you over the age of 55?  (If you’re not, share this with your parents or grandparents, please.)  How do you feel about marijuana?  You’ve probably grown up in the post baby boomer generation when the war on drugs included marijuana labeled as the gateway drug. That probably sounds crazy, given the fact that 28 states now have laws in place for legal access to cannabis, while ten states have measures on the 2018 ballot.  While scientific evidence shows the medical benefits of cannabis, beware of political scare tactics that use the word “marijuana” as they are often inaccurate, false,... Read More

April 14th, 2018

The NoCo Hemp Expo hit Loveland, CO last weekend on April 6th and 7th. The largest hemp expo in the world, NoCo partnered with Athletes For Care (A4C) as their NFP benefactor for the incredible two day event. A4C “is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating a community where athletes can find support, opportunity and purpose in life after a career in sports.” They “are an organization founded by a group of pro athletes who are uniting as one voice to advocate for research, education, and compassion when addressing important health issues facing athletes and the public at large.” On... Read More

Cannabis Miles for Charity

March 3rd, 2018

With 11 races scheduled this year, including an 8 person Ragnar Relay over 2 days, the MJFITNUT Team will be logging in some serious miles. Each one of those miles spent training and competing will be fueled by cannabis. Does this mean cannabis flower and concentrates, or edibles and topicals? All of the above. Does it also mean hemp seeds, hemp protein powders, and other hemp food products? You bet it does. These routines are that of a cannabis athlete, and the miles cannabis athletes put in could be called cannabis miles. MJFITNUT has committed to donate their cannabis miles to charity, and you... Read More

What Are You Dankful for This Year?

November 29th, 2017

This article may come at you a little late this year, being that Thanksgiving was last week, but it is never too late to be thankful, or dankful this season. I normally like to use this column as an outlet to bemoan about something that most people would bend over backward for. It can be fun to sit back and air my grievances about the weed industry, after all, it is the landscape I see every day. Fortunately, the industry I work in is hot right now, so it affords me this outlet. No grievances today though, just love. I am dankful for all the amazing growers out there. Indoor farmers and outdoor... Read More

The Cannabegrateful Yoga Challenge

November 25th, 2017

I hope everyone had a terrific Thanksgiving. With it being a time when we all reflect on what we’re thankful for, it feels fitting to give some thanks of my own, and to share about my recent experience in The Cannabegrateful Yoga Challange. This Instagram challenge, hosted by Greenlove Denver and Canna_Sam, started on November 13th and lasted for 7 days. Each day there was a specific yoga pose, but the challenge was more than just taking a photo of your practice. The challenge also consisted of digging deeper to share something we were grateful for each day. The yoga pose line up: Day 1- seated... Read More

I am 1 of 65 Million Epilepsy Warriors Around the World

November 18th, 2017

Did you know that November is Epilepsy Awareness Month?  November was declared National Epilepsy Awareness Month in 2003 to help end the stigma surrounding the condition and to generate education and understanding for those living with epilepsy. People all around the country get involved and show support for epilepsy awareness to help promote change for those who are affected. I am one of approximately 3.4 million people in the U.S. living with epilepsy and 65 million people worldwide. Those affected by the condition are more than those affected by autism spectrum disorders, Parkinson’s... Read More

Bongs and Barbells

November 4th, 2017

It’s been an exciting year in the cannabis and athletics industry. If you pay attention to the headlines in cannabis industry news publications like Sensi Magazine, Merry Jane, The Cannabist, Dope Magazine, and several others you may have noticed a rise in cannabis athletic related topics. Even many mainstream publications like Vogue are covering the rising industry that is CannaFitness. On top of an increase in news publications surrounding my favorite subject, consuming cannabis as an athlete or for overall health and wellness, there has been a rise in apparel companies promoting cannabis... Read More

CBD Coffee

October 21st, 2017

Every morning, the first thing I do after getting out of bed is make coffee. The ritual of making it begins my entire morning routine. I really enjoy dark roasts. I absolutely love the aroma of a freshly brewed dark roast coffee. I even enjoy the smell of walking through the coffee aisle at the grocery store! I like my coffee black, with no cream or sugar. I’ve come to savor the bitterness and usually will have two or even three cups in the morning. I typically consume cannabis early in the morning too, which is why I was excited when I first found out about CBD infused coffee. I was first... Read More

Fighting ALS with Murder and Mystery

October 14th, 2017

I first started learning about cannabis having neuroprotective properties after witnessing my wife have a seizure. Having never witnessed a seizure before, and not knowing how long it would last, or what to do after, it was a frightening experience. As terrifying as it may have been, it was the catalyst which began our research into the medicinal properties of cannabinoids. What I’ve learned since then has been remarkable. The cannabis plant has the potential to help several conditions, and improve the quality of life for those who have been diagnosed with lifelong illnesses, but not all diseases... Read More

Legendary Leader

October 7th, 2017

Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the world premier of the documentary exploring marijuana’s use and evolution as a plant and industry, “The Legend of 420”. The film was produced and directed by Emmy and Academy Award-nominated, Peter Spirer, with Rugged Entertainment and XLRator Media. The premier in Denver, now the hub for hemp and marijuana movie premiers known as Hollyweed, was made possible by Amy Bourlon-Hilterbran, the founder and CEO of Millennium Grown Broadcast Network. Millennium Grown brought this premier to Denver, and contains online content about marijuana and hemp... Read More

Ellementa: Women and Wellness

September 23rd, 2017

Women and Wellness go hand in hand. Women are traditionally more attune with their overall health and wellness needs for themselves, as well as their loved ones. I recently had the pleasure of attending my first Ellementa monthly meeting in Denver, this past August. Ellementa is a women-owned national startup building network, and resource for women interested in learning about cannabis wellness. They meet monthly in their locations to discuss health, wellness, and cannabis, with the goal of reaching and educating women. The group aims to release the stigma surrounding the plant, and hopes to empower... Read More

Marijuana, Meditation, and Mindfulness

September 9th, 2017

For me, marijuana has always been a means of mental stress relief. Before I became a cannabis athlete, I consumed marijuana regularly to help with anxiety and stress. Before moving to Colorado, from Missouri in 2015, my life consisted of 60-70 hour work weeks in corporate finance, and if I wasn’t in the actual office, I was at a dinner, or an auction, or some other event related to my work. The success was nice, but the stress was overwhelming. After long days and/or nights at the office, I would come home and calm my nervous system with the relaxing smoke of marijuana. Being in Missouri at the... Read More
