Boulder’s Controversial Holiday Decoration: Flagstaff Star

December 28th, 2023

If you’ve spent an evening in Boulder since November 11, then you have noticed the giant, lighted star outline on the western face of the Flatirons. What you might not know is how one simple holiday tradition became a hotly contested issue for Boulder citizens, and a medium of political commentary. The Flagstaff Star was originally displayed in 1947 but the Boulder Chamber of Commerce, who still own the start to this day. It was meant as a simply Christmas decoration aimed at uniting Boulder in the spirit of the holiday. The next year, the star began to transform. Shifting between a Christmas... Read More

A Brief, Chaotic History of the Flagstaff Star

December 24th, 2023

Imagine, getting back from a long day in Denver. It’s cold, it’s dark, and there’s some minor evening traffic. Then, you ascend the final hill towards Boulder, and you’re greeted by the bright shape of a star on the mountains. That’s the moment I wait for every November. During Veteran’s Day last week, the star began its annual winter residency in Boulder. The star is an important symbol, and no Boulder winter is complete without the giant glowing shape on Flagstaff Mountain. It provides a little extra light in a season when days are shorter and nights... Read More

For those who do not celebrate the holiday, hopefully today still comes as a brief reprieve from work.  If you find yourself out on the town, looking for something to do this eve, you can always head to downtown Boulder. The Dark Horse Bar and Grill is having a Karaoke night this Christmas Eve.  They are featuring pints of Odells for $4.00 and Smirnoff vodka, flavored or plain for $3.00. How to Be Single for the Holidays

December 3rd, 2020

The Holiday 2020 season is upon us. We’ve made it through Thanksgiving, and, having given adequate thanks for the families that we alternately want to hug and garrotte, we now await the horrors of Hanukwanzmas. Yes, the agony of coerced celebration is well upon us. Perhaps for those who have great jobs, loving partners, beautiful children, and supportive parents, the holidays are wonderful times of joyful celebration. For the rest of us, I offer this account of the internal life of a holiday celebrant. It documents Thanksgiving, but the principles can be applied to any upcoming holiday. 07:05am... Read More

3 Christmas Light Displays to Get You in The Mood

December 6th, 2019

One of my favorite things to do around Christmas is to see all the different light displays! I’m too lazy to ever put lights up myself, but boy is it magical to see a bunch of Christmas lights brighten up a street or scene that looks quite normal in the daylight. These are some cool Christmas light attractions that are sure to dazzle you!   Mile High Tree This is a new attraction to Denver this year: a massive electronic tree on the side of Speer Boulevard! It’s a nice take on a big tree attraction for Denver, resembling something like a sister to the Rockefeller Christmas Tree in... Read More

Christmas Break!

December 16th, 2016

Finals are over and its almost time for Christmas! This year CU has a slightly longer Christmas vacation than previous years. We have an entire month off this time, we go back to school January 17th. Having a whole month off sounds fab because I hate doing school work and love sleeping in and just hanging out all day. It’s also the last time that I will have this amount of time off to just do nothing before I have to enter the real world at the end of second semester. However, when I think about it, one month is a really long time when you have nothing planned, so I’ll have to keep myself busy.... Read More

Find Your Christmas Tree the Old Fashioned Way

December 17th, 2015

“The most wonderful time of year” right? Shopping malls, crowded parking lots, traffic, long lines, people who have seem to forgotten the joy of the season.  I love this time of year but sometimes Christmas gets too commercial, too much about spending money. Every magazine, blog, and “community” news piece is centered around listing the perfect gift ideas for the countless people in your life. Wouldn’t it be better to actually spend some time doing something with those people? We all have so much stuff. It weighs us down. Why not make a memory rather than make them... Read More

These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things: Aspen Vape Pen

December 24th, 2014

The holiday season is at its peak! Feasts are being prepared, fires are being stoked, and stoners are gathering for drinks & a festive toke! Excuse my lyrical words, as I simply couldn’t resist! I am writing to you from my living room where kittens are sleeping, the Christmas tree glowing, and Dr. Suess’ The Grinch is playing in the background. When you put aside the termites in his smile and the garlic in his soul, The Grinch truly knew what was up! Whilst stealing the roast beast, he also snagged the last can of who hash! Hash has been a consistent trend in the past 40 years.... Read More
