Looking Back: Boulder Beer: Bold Since 1979

January 25th, 2023

Founded in 1979, on a farm just northeast of town, Boulder Beer has come a long way since it planted its roots in the Boulder Valley 38 years ago. As Colorado’s First Craft Brewery, Boulder Beer quickly took off, giving beer lovers an extraordinary change. After expanding their product, the brewmasters realized that they needed to expand their space as well, moving to the Pub on Wilderness Place in 1994. There are now two Boulder Beer locations – the one on Wilderness Place, and the other just off the Pearl Street Mall on Walnut. The Pub on Wilderness has to be my favorite location,... Read More

Faces of Boulder – Pic of the Day – Giselle & Maddy

December 1st, 2022

“She’s moving to Indianapolis this weekend so I took her out for margs. I figured it’s the least I could do for her after having a friend that puts up with me. I really don’t know what I’m going to do without her here … maybe I’ll just move into her closet in Indiana.” – Giselle with Maddy  Read More

A Brief History of the Beer Boot

January 11th, 2022

Drinking beer is not the only thing I do, so the other day, I decided to go on a lovely jaunt through downtown Boulder. Where was I walking, do you ask? To the Bohemian Biergarten, of course! I was on a quest to discover the history behind the beloved beer boot, or Das Boot, as many of us fondly refer to it. I arrived at my destination, but to my disappointment, their Bavarian chef, Martin König, was away, and my question could not be answered. I actually think my curiosity may have sparked the same questioning surrounding Das Boot in others. Anyways, I am not the most patient person, so instead... Read More

No Name Bar: It’s as Inconspicuous as it Sounds

July 1st, 2021

Tucked away in a small complex on the Hill, sandwiched between Dot’s Diner and Cosmo’s Pizza, lies is a hidden gem. The No Name Bar, connected to Cosmo’s Pizza is a hip, speakeasy-esque bar. Its entrance, a large, elegant wooden door, stands alone in a dark corner beneath a set of outdoor stairs. At first glance, it appears to lead nowhere—it lacks the typical outdoor lighting that announces a restaurant or bar’s presence. And, most peculiarly, it lacks a sign. Their business card matchbooks that line the bar neither have any contact information nor any name, marked with a simple ‘C’... Read More

Top 3 Fun Hangs in Boulder

July 30th, 2019

1. Half Fast Subs  I LOVE Half Fast Subs! It’s got great prices on drinks and subs, and the dive atmosphere is my favorite. Located on Boulder’s ever-changing ‘The Hill’ district, the atmosphere has some old0-school charm. It’s a no-frills, low key establishment that feels very comfortable to hang out at. Kick back on the patio, drink a pitcher of Long Island Iced Tea—dubbed the ‘Strongo’—and laugh with friends. You can’t beat it.  2. The Spot  The Spot is a cool hidden gem that has a fine duality; you can climb and drink a beer. The Spot was the first bouldering gym to... Read More

BRU Brings Craftsmanship to All Menus

June 23rd, 2017

When you’re feeling peckish and craving a quality beer, BRU Handbuilt Ales and Eats has you covered. Still one of the newer-comers on the craft beer scene, BRU has built an excellent reputation for both its food and beer since its inception in 2012. They’re known for their unfiltered, naturally carbonated ales and made-from-scratch sourdough. I have to admit to some favoritism among those ales. My number one from BRU is the Solus Patersbier. This easy-drinking beer packs a spiced flavor, with bitter orange and coriander used during the brewing process. It owes its hazy golden color to being... Read More

Walnut Brewery Needs to Be on Every Beer Lover’s Bucket List

May 9th, 2017

Walnut Brewery’s Old Elk Brown Ale tastes like victory. Perhaps it’s because the English-style brown ale wins medals as often as the US Olympic gymnastics team; the beer is a two-time Silver and Gold medalist at the Great American Beer Festival awards. The brew is rich and malty, with notes of caramel and chocolate and subtle hops. The beer is as delicious as it is interesting and needs to be on ever beer snob’s bucket list. Of course, the brewery offers lots of delectable brews worth tasting. Some of my favorites? 1123 IPA  I love a good, strong IPA. This hoppy brew is tropical... Read More

Riffs Urban Fare in three words: trendy, whimsical, exquisite. I love this contemporary cocktail lounge so much; I dare say they serve the most innovative, creative meals in all of Pearl Street Mall. Need more convincing? Here are some of the amazing features this eatery offers: The Ambience Riffs Urban Fare’s cocktail lounge setting is two parts cool, one part whimsy. The contemporary interior is balanced with quirky wall fixtures, like the framed jigsaw puzzles or blush colored moutainscape painting that engages the expanse of the wall behind the bar. In size, the restaurant is modest, containing... Read More

Straight from the Source: Boulder Breweries

February 13th, 2015

After a long week, sometimes it’s nice to just kick back and relax with a nice pint of beer. Luckily, Boulder has a handful of microbreweries that also offer some pretty stellar happy hours. Twisted Pine Brewing Company is quickly growing to become one of my favorite spots for a cold brew. Located just behind The Spot, it is tucked away from the chaos of downtown Boulder. When you pull into their parking lot, a smell of barley and hops wafts through the air, quickly reassuring you in your decision to come to Twisted Pine. On top of their unique selection of year-round beer, including their famous... Read More

Riffs Urban Fare

September 25th, 2014

Last Friday, we stumbled into Riffs on Pearl Street not quite knowing what to expect. We had just popped into a handful of West Pearl restaurants, to find the same thing at all: 45 minute wait, overflowing with students and visiting parents, or overpriced. As many wonderful things as I had heard about Riffs, I had only enjoyed a drink or two at their bar and never actually ordered their food. We decided to see that it was all give it a whirl… What a surprise! A pleasant, excellent, tasty, and affordable surprise! We were seated within 2 minutes of walking through the door (refreshing since... Read More
