Boulder and the Fourth of July: Celebrating Without Fireworks in 2025

For the second year in a row, Boulder, Colorado will be celebrating the Fourth of July without fireworks or a drone show. The traditional event at Folsom Field has again been canceled due to a combination of budget concerns and the growing risk of wildfires across the Front Range. But that doesn’t mean the holiday is canceled—far from it. Boulder is buzzing with alternative ways to celebrate that are just as festive, local, and unforgettable.

Boulder’s Daytime Magic

Start your morning with a stroll down Pearl Street Mall, where the buzz of street musicians, artists, and cafes gives off that classic Boulder vibe. From there, swing by the Boulder Farmers Market to grab some fresh bites, or pack a picnic and head to the Boulder Reservoir. Open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., it’s a local favorite for swimming, paddleboarding, or relaxing under the sun.

Prefer something on dry land? A hike at Chautauqua or a peaceful walk through Eben G. Fine Park offers spectacular views and a quiet start to the holiday. No matter where you go, Boulder’s natural beauty will be on full display.

Even without fireworks, Boulder is bringing the celebration to life through music and creativity. The Boulder Symphonywill host a special Fourth of July concert from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Glen Huntington Bandshell. The outdoor performance will include patriotic and cinematic classics, and tickets are available for $7.50 to $15 through the symphony’s official site.

The Boulder Juggling Festival also returns this weekend, running July 4–6 at locations across town, including the Boulder Circus Center and Shining Mountain Waldorf. For something more laid-back, the Open Studios Gallery on Pearl Street will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. on the 4th, with music, artist showcases, and even psychic readings.

And for those looking to keep things lively into the afternoon, Boulder Social is hosting live music from 1 to 4 p.m., featuring Shawn Cunnane on July 4.

Want Fireworks? Head Just a Bit Farther

For those who still want to catch a fireworks show, several neighboring towns have stepped up. Longmont will host a full evening of festivities beginning at 5 p.m. with a drone show at 9:15 p.m. and fireworks around 9:30 p.m. in the Emery Street area.

Louisville will also offer a classic fireworks display at Coal Creek Golf Course starting at 9:30 p.m., following live music and food trucks. And for the early birds, Erie held its celebration the night before on July 3.

A New Kind of Fourth

This year’s Independence Day is a reminder that fireworks aren’t the only way to celebrate. From hikes and concerts to art walks and swimming holes, Boulder offers a Fourth of July experience grounded in nature, creativity, and community.
