Bear Peak is commonly considered to be towards the southern end of Boulder’s Flatirons range, a group of rock formations on the city’s western outskirts. Hiking to the summit of Bear Peak is a popular activity. In addition to trekking, Bear Peak is home to at least three rock climbing formations: The Slab, The Goose, and Seal Rock. The rock climbs on these formations range from 5.2 (easy) to 5.13 (tough). The Flagstaff Fire started on June 26, 2012, and burnt an upper area of Bear Peak. Although some homes in south Boulder were evacuated, no structures were destroyed in the fire. The Flagstaff Fire was part of Colorado’s busy fire season in 2012.
