Boulder’s Sound Healing – Ambient artist : Shane Williams

Third Eye Sound and the journey

Third Eye Sound, Boulder’s own portal into sound therapy and ambient music, is the visionary creation of Shane Williams. Through Third Eye Sound, Shane conjures soundscapes that resonate with the subtle energies of nature and spirit. These deeply immersive sound baths weave ethereal electronic textures with field recordings from sacred sites: the tranquil bird calls recorded in Nepal, the gentle rhythm of falling rain, the cascading flow of waterfalls, and the grounding whispers of a meandering stream. Tibetan singing bowls, celestial chimes, and resonant Nepali gongs amplify these spaces, infusing each composition with healing frequencies that evoke an expansive and contemplative journey.

For over 25 years, Shane has immersed himself in the ancient rhythms of Indian Classical Music, studying tabla with revered masters who guided him in the depth and nuance of sound. In 2005, his musical path took a new direction as he studied electronic music production at Berklee College of Music, merging his traditional knowledge with a meditative, ambient modernity. His music, crafted with an ear for spiritual resonance and a touch of New Age and electronic ambient sounds, reveals a unique blend of the ancient and the visionary.

Inspiration and Influences in Third Eye Sound’s Music

Third Eye Sound draws on an ethereal mix of ambient and sound-healing traditions, with deep inspiration from ambient pioneers like Steve Roach and Robert Rich. Shane’s music embodies a spiritual journey, melding the mystical and meditative with the vast sonic possibilities of electronic ambient. A pivotal moment in Shane’s creative evolution came during a recent sound bath meditation in Kathmandu, Nepal. While absorbing the sustained resonance of a large C Gong, Shane had an epiphany: to create extended meditative compositions woven from the resonant frequencies of gongs, Tibetan singing bowls, and other sacred instruments.

Central to his compositions is the frequency of 432 Hz, a tone revered within the sound healing community. Known to some as the frequency of A4 or “Pa” in Indian classical music, 432 Hz is thought to resonate more harmoniously with the natural vibrations of the universe than the conventional 440 Hz tuning. For Third Eye Sound, this frequency is the gateway to an immersive experience, guiding listeners into states of relaxation, alignment, and transcendence.

Crafting the Visionary Sound of Third Eye Sound

Shane’s approach to crafting immersive soundscapes is an artful process of layering and blending. Using a combination of field recordings, synthesized textures, and resonant tones, he creates a vast, enveloping sonic atmosphere. His tools include the Waldorf Iridium, Korg Wavestate, and Roland Hydrasynth, alongside virtual instruments like Omnisphere, Arturia, and Native Instruments software. With the addition of effects such as Valhalla Supermassive and FabFilter plugins, he brings depth and space to his compositions.

Field recordings of gongs, singing bowls, bells, and chimes are the heart of Third Eye Sound, enhanced with reverb, delays, and the alchemical transformations of granular synthesis. Each element contributes to an expansive, otherworldly soundscape—one that can be equally suited for meditation, yoga, sleep, or contemplative journeying.

Aspirations and Vision

Shane’s aspiration is to reveal the transformative power of ambient music—not merely as background sound but as an interactive, visionary experience. Through Third Eye Sound, he seeks to inspire listeners to dive deeply into themselves, discovering how sound and vibration can open pathways to healing and self-awareness. His journey is one of sharing, guiding others to experience the profound potential of sound therapy, immersing them in an auditory sanctuary where music becomes a vessel for personal insight and inner peace.

What is a sound-bath?

A sound bath is a meditative experience that involves listening to resonant sounds to promote relaxation and healing. The sounds are usually created by instruments like singing bowls, gongs, bells, and chimes. The goal is to immerse the listener in sound, similar to how a bath immerses a person in water. Third Eye Sound produces music for listeners to have a sense of peace, calm and to unwind into a vast expanse of immersive sound.

His work reflects an ongoing journey of sound healing exploration, as he continually refines his studio techniques to unlock deeper dimensions of sonic wellness.
