A Flash of Color in the Foothills

Spring in Boulder brings a quiet kind of magic, and few sights capture it better than the sudden appearance of the western tanager. With its fiery red head, golden-yellow body, and jet-black wings, this bird doesn’t just blend into the landscape—it electrifies it.

Right now, during peak migration season, western tanagers are making their way through Boulder, stopping in higher elevation areas and forested foothills to rest and refuel. For bird lovers, photographers, and anyone who appreciates nature, this is one of the best times of the year to catch a glimpse.

And if you know where to look, your chances go way up.

Betasso Preserve: Boulder’s Tanager Sweet Spot

One of the top locations to spot western tanagers is Betasso Preserve, just west of Boulder.

This area checks all the boxes:

  • Mixed pine and deciduous forest
  • Moderate elevation
  • Quiet, less crowded trails
  • Ideal habitat during migration

Western tanagers are often seen perched high in the canopy, moving quickly between branches, or calling softly as they forage for insects.

The Canyon Loop Trail is especially productive, offering a mix of shade and open views where these birds tend to appear. Early morning is your best bet, when the forest is calm and bird activity is highest.

Chautauqua and the Flatirons: Scenic and Surprising

While many people head to Chautauqua Park for the iconic Flatirons views, it’s also a surprisingly good place to spot western tanagers—especially along the more wooded sections of the trails.

Look for:

  • Tree-lined areas along the Bluebell and Mesa Trails
  • Transitional zones between open meadows and forest
  • Quiet pockets away from heavy foot traffic

The contrast of a bright tanager against the dramatic backdrop of the Flatirons makes for unforgettable photos—and perfect content for AboutBoulder.

Flagstaff Mountain: Elevation Matters

If you want to increase your odds, head a little higher.

Flagstaff Mountain offers prime habitat for migrating tanagers, with cooler temperatures and dense forest cover. Areas along Flagstaff Road, as well as trailheads leading into the surrounding woods, are known for bird activity this time of year.

Bring binoculars, because these birds often stay high in the treetops—but when the sunlight hits them just right, they’re impossible to miss.

Why They’re Here Now

Western tanagers migrate from Central America and Mexico to breeding grounds across the western United States, including Colorado. Boulder sits right along their migration path, making it a seasonal hotspot.

Their peak window typically runs from late April through May, depending on weather patterns. During this time, they stop in places like Boulder’s foothills to rest and feed before continuing their journey.

That’s why sightings can feel sudden and fleeting—one day they’re everywhere, and the next, they’ve moved on.

Tips for Spotting Western Tanagers

Want to increase your chances? Here’s what works:

  • Go early in the morning for peak activity
  • Listen for soft, robin-like calls coming from above
  • Scan the treetops—especially sunlit branches
  • Look for movement first, then color
  • Stay patient—these birds move quickly

And if you’ve got a great camera or lens, even better. These are the kinds of shots that can stop a scroll and drive serious engagement.
