As the sun rises over our Boulder Valley it shines on our Lady Buffs. The excitement of the final game of the season pervades the Valley! And I get to share my tale of re-discovering my Buff status.

I did not realize that I was and am a BUFF!!! Do I have a degree from the justifiably highly respected institution of higher learning, the University of Colorado? I do not. BUT I have taught class sessions there, have presented to thousands of students at various conferences, and I believe I am either a Buff or an honorary Buff. My real connection to my Buffness came at the hands of a friend here at AboutBoulder. He suggested that Debi and I go to see the Lady Buffs and blog about it. For the $5 a seat that game cost, it was the best $10 I’ve spent in a long time. Fellow photographer and wife Debi Dodge (over 10 hours at CU Boulder, straight “A” grades, and more) and I awakened our Buff attachment. The Lady Buffs awakened it, and it runs deep already.  I AM a BUFF and I AM a FAN!

Lady Buffs Awaken My Inner Baby Buff and AWAKENS  My Inner Lady Buff Fan!

I was bitten by the Buff Basketball Bug and have not missed a home game since. I knew that when we started being aware of individual players, started knowing some of the players by number and more and more by name, that we were toast. We’d been infected with the spirit of the school we’ve lived with and studied at and taught at over our 50 years in Boulder. I came to Boulder on a catalog that said “seven years here and you are a native.” We all know that the catalog you come in on controls your four years at college. Boulder adopted me and I adopted Boulder. Part of becoming a native in my adopted home is to become a Buffs fan.

We had Buffs Football season tickets for two years. That was great. From our love of Ralphie to our appreciation of the great team and fans, the experience was wonderful. It did not, for me, awaken my inner Buff. Not like the Lady Buffs did!

Shelimo Sanders Sports #22 On The Court

My degree of sports ignorance is rather deep. I have been cheering for one of our favorites, Sanders, #22 Lady Buff. My friend asked if I know of the Sanders sports dynasty in the world and at CU. “No, fill me in.” I am embarrassed to admit that I did not appreciate the true depth of Deion Sanders  as one of the greatest athletes to ever grace our world. I can however, a comedian at heart, envision the following exchange “Mr. Sanders, I understand you’re a pretty good athlete. I don’t know much about that, but I KNOW that your daughter, Shelomi Sanders, is a wonderful basketball player, a great member of the Lady Buff team, and that I’ve seen  that with my own eyes, up close and personal. You must be very proud.” I understand you’ve played some professional sports yourself! Cool <G>

Knowing now that Deion Sanders is a comedian also, as well as a most famous sports caster, my hope of course is to totally crack him up! The glow of pride I imagine in this proud father at my honest heart-felt reaction to his daughter’s playing and spirit is wonderful. So far he has not ridiculed my ignorance.  I can see my honest ignorance leading to his smile which lights up the room. Actually his laugh. I would not say this to the Big Man if he were drinking red wine while wearing a white shirt.

My Buffs hat is off to the Sanders family for bringing so much to all of us, and the hat tip is especially to Shelomi #22 and the spectacular Lady Buffs she plays with. I’ll google this “Deion” guy to end my ignorance <VBG> <Very Big Grin> I understand that he is a pretty good athlete!

GO BUFFS!!! See you at 1 PM with my cheering voice in tune, my Buffs tee shirt worn with pride, and my smile firmly in place to support our Lady Buffs to a victory in their final season game against Washington State.
