Saturday Sunrise Spectacle
Another EARLY Sunrise!
While I love the colors of Boulder sunrise, I do find that it seems to occur at a rather inconvenient hour every day! If sunrise were at noon, for example, I could have coffee and two meals before stepping out the back door to snap a few of another glorious sunrise. I suppose that adjusting the tilt of the earth on it’s rotational axis is out of the question, even in the land of astronauts and the rest of the University of Colorado brain trust. I trust their brains enough to not try to change the tilt of the earth. They’d probably notice. SO, I’ll stick with my alarm setting on the phone and call it good.
May the sun be over your port bow and may your sunscreen be thick.
There is an old expression “may the wind be at your back.” That’s fine if you’re sailing a square rigger that is propelled, being pushed by the wind coming from over the stern. The common sloop rig with its two triangular sails works like an airplane wing, except by tilting it on the side. That way, instead of lift, the sail works from the wind coming in front, and the sails, acting like wings actually speeds the air up, so the sailboat can go faster than the wind. The smaller sail in the front speeds the wind up. The main sail then does the same thing with the wind speeding up even more, and we sail literally faster than the wind. Thus, we benefit the most from having the wind come from the port or starboard bow. Say 45 degrees to the side of dead ahead. Either side.
So WHY am I talking sailing when it is 17 degrees F or -8 degrees C? Wishful thinking! After all, it will be above freezing today!
AND FINALLY, the Lady Buffs-UCLA basketball game last night set an attendance record at over 11,300 fans!
