Do not tell a Boulder kitty that it is not a lion or other large cat. Feral (wild) cats are a vital cog in the wheel of the back yard’s health.

Feral cats often get framed only as a problem, but there are a few legitimate positives—mostly tied to ecology, human environments, and how people interact with them.

One of the biggest benefits is rodent control. Feral cats are natural predators, and in many areas they help keep populations of mice and rats down. This can matter around farms, warehouses, and even some urban neighborhoods where rodents carry disease or damage food supplies.

They also play a role in the broader idea of urban ecosystems. In cities, wildlife adapts in unusual ways, and feral cats are part of that system. While they can disrupt some species (especially birds), they also occupy a niche that might otherwise be filled by other predators.

Another positive comes from managed colonies, often through programs like Trap–Neuter–Return (TNR). When communities humanely manage feral cats—spaying/neutering them and returning them to their territory—it can stabilize populations over time and reduce behaviors like fighting, spraying, and constant breeding.

There’s also a human side. Some people form connections with feral cats, caring for colonies and finding meaning in helping animals that live outside traditional pet ownership. In some cases, feral cats can even become socialized and adopted, transitioning into domestic life.

That said, these positives come with real trade-offs. Feral cats can significantly impact native wildlife, especially birds and small mammals, and unmanaged populations tend to grow quickly. So the “positive side” is most evident when there’s thoughtful, responsible management rather than unchecked populations.

Shared knowledge is power!
