Return to Boulder. Super Day, Superbowl, Sun Set in Florida

February 11th, 2024

Sunset Over Florida As I Fly Home. Back to Boulder! As the sun sets over the Florida East Coast the sun also sets of my Florida vacation. At least it is not a shock of cold and snow.  Wait, wait, that’s wrong. I have to admit that the weather in Florida when I left was amazing.  The trip was amazing, and gives me this opportunity to share some of my pics. Hat’s off to Delta Airlines. They got me to Florida, and more importantly they flew me home. While I could wax eloquently, I’ll leave waxing to the moon!  Their effort was effective and excellent. This is Lensworth At Large,... Read More

Steps to Summit Your First 14er

February 11th, 2024

When you look out over the mountain peaks that make Colorado one of the most beautiful places to live in the country, you may see certain summits that tower over the others, snowcapped even late into the summer. Many of these are known as 14ers, and their height reaches over 14,000 feet above sea level. There are 58 of these massive peaks in Colorado, the most of any state in the country, and conquering them is a rite of passage for any outdoor enthusiast. But don’t think you can just hop on a trail and summit a 14er—these monsters take more preparation than you might think. Here’s a handy... Read More

Cold Plunging: What’s the Skinny?

February 10th, 2024
walrus, winter swimming, hardening

You’ve probably heard of cold plunging, the wellness trend that involves jumping into ice water for a few minutes. Sounds crazy, right? Well, not so fast. There’s actually some science behind this practice, and it might have some surprising benefits for your health and well-being. But before you grab your swimsuit and head to the Boulder Creek, here are some things you should know. Take the Plunge into Type-2 Fun Type II Fun refers to experiences that are hard or difficult in the moment but beneficial (and fun) in the long-run or in retrospect. While cold plunging may be uncomfortable (excruciating?)... Read More

Hike of the Week: Chautauqua-Gregory Canyon Loop

February 4th, 2024

The hike of the week, which I dubbed The Chautauqua-Gregory Canyon loop is one of the best long hikes for the experienced hiker to enjoy in solitude, or for friends to have private conversation and share a picnic. Around 4.5 miles, the loop is a low key hike with some downhill and uphill, as well as a couple creek crossings, and a ladder. Along most of the Gregory Canyon trail you will enjoy the soothing sound of the creek and green foliage, and as you loop back on Saddle Rock and E.M. Greenman you will see awe-inspiring views of the city below. When on Saddle Rock, prepare yourself for using the... Read More

Never Longs Gone, Late Sunrise on Longs Peak

January 24th, 2024

Let’s open with an early sunrise picture, and then progress to Longs a little later in the morning. I have observed that even after 49 years of seeing Longs Peak and the front range/divide, it never looks the same. The light changes. The clouds change. The mountains uplift (although that does not change much day-to-day), and in short, if you look, if you notice, the view is NEVER the same. With Longs Peak such a dominant feature in our Boulder Mountain Backdrop it is our perpetual Mother Mountain. Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) in Colorado is a beacon for mountaineers and nature enthusiasts,... Read More

Sunset If You Stand On Your Head!Relativity At Work.

January 22nd, 2024

If you take this Boulder sunrise picture, the picture I felt like sharing, and look at it upside down, it should work as a sunset picture for tonight. We’re still basking in the goal of the hard-won Lady Buff‘s victory on Sunday over USC! The juxtaposition of the orange and blue, complimentary colors, are what makes the sky pop for me. May the wind be over your port bow and may your sunscreen be thick.  Read More

Hike Zapata Falls This Winter

January 21st, 2024

Just 3 miles south of the Entrance to the Great Sand Dunes National Park is an amazing waterfall that is not that well known and often only lightly trafficked. It is called Zapata Falls and while most tourists head there during the summer to escape the high temperatures at the great sand dunes, the real beauty is seeing this waterfall completely frozen.   There is no doubt that most visitors to the Great Sand Dunes see the sign for Zapata Falls on their way into the park, but the rocky entrance road and their (probable) itinerary of getting to the sand dunes likely wards off most visitors. Add... Read More
