Back When Pearl Street Had Grass: A Rare Look at Boulder’s History

The Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, Colorado, has evolved significantly since its establishment in 1977. In its early years, the mall featured grassy areas that provided a park-like atmosphere for visitors. These green spaces were popular among college students who would lounge and play Frisbee, contributing to a lively and relaxed environment. However, over time, the grass became worn due to heavy foot traffic, and concerns arose about its impact on local businesses. As a result, during the mall’s 25th anniversary in 2002, the grassy sections were replaced with a large fountain made of Colorado flagstone, aiming to create a more durable and business-friendly space. This change marked a shift in the mall’s design, balancing aesthetic appeal with practical considerations to maintain its status as a central hub in Boulder.
