The Butterfly Pavilion is home to more than butterflies. Beyond Butterflies: Discovering Westminster’s Hidden World of Beetles, Spiders and Sea Stars is a great adventure for the “not faint of heart.”  We also find corals, beetles, spiders, and more. Let’s take a look at some tidal coral and a giant green anemone with a starfish. .

At first glance, Derby’s Flower Beetle looks almost too colorful to be real. A closer look reveals a tiny masterpiece of nature, where brilliant colors, patterns, and textures combine to create a subject every photographer hopes to discover. Notice the picture’s strong diagonal where the beetle is balanced by the green in the foreground.

Not every star of the insect world wears bright colors. The Darkling Beetle reminds us that beauty can be found in texture, form, and design. A closer look reveals a creature perfectly adapted to its environment and filled with photographic possibilities.. I used the “macro” closeup setting to get the focus on the closeups of some of these most interesting creatures. Shoot a lot of pictures and be aware of the autofocus grabbing onto something closer (or farther away) in the scene. The “lock” feature from the half way click on the shutter can be helpful in locking in the right object for the focus. Trial and error is essential in my experience.

One of the hidden treasures of Westminster’s Butterfly Pavilion is the tidal pool exhibit. Here, colorful corals, sea stars, sea anemones, and other fascinating marine invertebrates create an underwater world that seems far removed from Colorado’s Front Range. The intricate patterns of brain coral, the graceful movement of anemone tentacles, and the surprising textures of sea stars offer endless opportunities for observation and photography. These remarkable creatures remind us that beauty comes in many forms. Whether viewed through a camera lens or simply with curiosity, the tidal pool reveals a world of color, design, and adaptation that is every bit as captivating as the butterflies themselves.
