Boulder County Freeze Watch Issued as Temperatures Could Drop to 30 Degrees

A late-season cold snap is heading into Boulder County, and the National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Watch for parts of northeast Colorado and the I-25 corridor. Overnight temperatures could dip near freezing late Monday night into early Tuesday morning, creating the potential for frost damage across the region. (National Weather Service)

Even in mid-May, Colorado weather can still surprise gardeners and homeowners with sudden cold snaps.

What This Means for Boulder County

Sensitive plants, vegetable gardens, flowers, and newly planted crops could be damaged if temperatures fall to or below freezing overnight. Lower elevations and open areas east of the foothills are expected to face the greatest risk.

Communities including Longmont, Lafayette, Erie, and eastern Boulder County may see the coldest overnight temperatures.

How to Protect Your Plants Tonight

• Cover tender plants with frost cloths, lightweight blankets, or bedsheets before sunset.
• Bring potted plants and hanging baskets indoors or into a garage if possible.
• Water gardens this evening since moist soil helps retain heat.
• Add mulch around the base of sensitive plants for extra root insulation.
• Remove coverings Tuesday morning after temperatures rise above freezing.

Colorado’s Spring Weather Can Change Fast

This comes just days after Colorado experienced an unusual late-season snowstorm that brought heavy snow and freezing temperatures to parts of the Front Range and Boulder County.

The National Weather Service could upgrade the Freeze Watch to a Freeze Warning if confidence increases in subfreezing temperatures overnight.
