Some dogs chase tennis balls. Some dogs chase squirrels. And then there are the dogs who discover the ultimate treasure—a giant stick—and proudly carry it around like they’ve won the lottery.

That was the scene today at Boulder Reservoir, where our Boulder Dog of the Day was spotted strutting along with an oversized stick firmly clenched in his mouth. The look on his face said it all. This wasn’t just a stick. It was the stick. A masterpiece. A trophy. A find worthy of showing every person, dog, and duck in sight.

The timing couldn’t have been better. Boulder Reservoir was shining under another beautiful Colorado day, with blue skies stretching above the sparkling water and the Front Range providing a stunning backdrop. The reservoir is one of Boulder’s favorite outdoor destinations, and days like this remind everyone why.

Located just north of town, Boulder Reservoir offers a refreshing escape from the city while still being only minutes away. Visitors come to paddleboard, sail, swim, run, walk, and simply soak in the views. For dogs, it’s an outdoor wonderland filled with new scents, exciting adventures, and endless opportunities to explore.

Boulder Reservoir

Today’s canine star seemed determined to make the most of every minute. Whether he found his prized stick near the shoreline or along one of the nearby trails remains a mystery. What is clear is that he was incredibly proud of his discovery. Every step looked like a victory parade.

One of the reasons Boulder Reservoir is such a favorite spot for local dog lovers is the variety of experiences it offers. Dogs enjoy the fresh air, open spaces, and natural surroundings, while their humans enjoy some of the best scenery in Colorado. It’s a place where simple moments often become memorable ones.

Fun fact: Boulder Reservoir covers nearly 700 acres and stores water that helps serve the Boulder area. It has become one of the city’s most popular recreation destinations and attracts visitors year-round. Another fun fact is that dogs naturally enjoy carrying sticks because it taps into their instincts to retrieve, explore, and play.

As the afternoon sun reflected off the water, today’s Dog of the Day continued his mission, proudly carrying his giant prize wherever he went. It was a simple reminder that happiness doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes all it takes is a beautiful Boulder day, a wagging tail, and a stick that’s just a little too big.

And at Boulder Reservoir, those are the moments that make memories.
