Boulder’s Dog of the Day: Why Dogs Love Sticks

BOULDER, Colorado — Today’s Dog of the Day captures one of the most classic sights on Boulder’s trails: a happy dog proudly carrying a stick beneath the Flatirons on a beautiful Colorado day.

Whether it’s a tiny twig or a branch twice their size, dogs seem to have an endless fascination with sticks. Spend enough time on Boulder’s trails, and you’ll almost certainly spot a four-legged adventurer trotting along with a prized stick held proudly in its mouth.

So what makes sticks so irresistible?

Dogs naturally enjoy carrying, retrieving, and chewing objects. These behaviors are rooted in instincts that have been passed down through generations. For many dogs, finding the perfect stick becomes a game, a challenge, and a reward all in one.

Retrieving breeds such as Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are especially known for carrying objects, but dogs of all breeds often enjoy the activity. A stick gives them something to explore, transport, and proudly show off to their humans.

Part of the attraction is sensory. Dogs experience the world through their noses, and sticks are filled with interesting scents from trees, soil, plants, and the surrounding environment. What looks ordinary to us can be endlessly fascinating to a dog.

Chewing can also provide enrichment and help relieve boredom. Puppies may enjoy chewing while teething, while adult dogs often find it mentally stimulating and satisfying. Add a game of fetch, and that simple stick suddenly becomes the centerpiece of an outdoor adventure.

There is also a social element. Many dogs quickly learn that carrying a stick earns attention, smiles, praise, and often another throw. Before long, the stick becomes part toy, part trophy.

Fun Facts About Dogs and Sticks

• Some dogs proudly carry sticks larger than their own bodies.

• Dogs often spend considerable time searching for what they consider the “perfect” stick.

• Carrying objects can provide mental stimulation and confidence-building opportunities.

• Boulder’s extensive network of dog-friendly trails gives local pups endless opportunities for stick adventures.

While sticks can be fun, safety is important. Sticks can splinter, injure mouths, or damage teeth. Pet owners should supervise play and watch for sharp or broken pieces. For aggressive chewers, dog-safe chew toys may be a better alternative.

Boulder’s trails, parks, and open spaces provide countless opportunities for dogs to explore the outdoors and express their natural curiosity. Today’s Dog of the Day reminds us that sometimes happiness is simple: blue skies, mountain views, a wagging tail, and the perfect stick.
