Escape Boulder Heat Wave: 3 Cool Road Trips Nearby

Eldorado Canyon State Park

With temperatures climbing into the mid-to-upper 90s in Boulder and Denver forecast to approach 100°F under an ongoing heat advisory, many Front Range residents are searching for relief. Fortunately, you don’t have to travel far. Colorado’s dramatic elevation changes mean cooler temperatures, shady canyons, mountain streams, and refreshing alpine air are all within an hour of Boulder.

Whether you’re looking for a quick afternoon escape or a full day in the mountains, these three road trips deliver a welcome break from the summer heat while showcasing some of Colorado’s most spectacular scenery.

1. Eldorado Springs Pool & Eldorado Canyon State Park (15–20 Minutes)

If you’re looking for the quickest escape from the heat, it’s hard to beat Eldorado Springs. Just south of Boulder, this historic destination combines one of Colorado’s most beloved swimming pools with the dramatic beauty of Eldorado Canyon.

The spring-fed Eldorado Springs Pool typically stays between 72 and 82 degrees, making it an ideal place to cool off during a hot summer afternoon. Surrounded by towering sandstone cliffs, the setting feels surprisingly secluded despite being only minutes from town.

Right next door, Eldorado Canyon State Park offers shaded hiking trails, beautiful creekside scenery, world-famous rock climbing, and picnic areas tucked beneath canyon walls. Thanks to the narrow canyon and flowing water, temperatures often feel noticeably cooler than they do back in Boulder.

Before You Go

  • Arrive early, especially on weekends.
  • Bring water shoes, sunscreen, and plenty of drinking water.
  • The pool operates separately from the state park.
  • During the reservation season, most personal vehicles visiting the state park on weekends and holidays need timed-entry reservations. Visitors arriving on the free Eldo Shuttle do not need a timed-entry reservation, although park entrance fees or passes still apply.

For a quick afternoon getaway, few places offer so much relief so close to Boulder.

2. Nederland & the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway (25–35 Minutes)

Head west through Boulder Canyon on Highway 119 and you’ll quickly climb nearly 3,000 feet to the mountain town of Nederland.

At roughly 8,200 feet in elevation, temperatures are often 10 degrees or more cooler than Boulder, making it one of the easiest ways to escape the summer heat without committing to a long drive.

Nederland’s laid-back downtown is filled with local coffee shops, restaurants, galleries, and ice cream stops. After strolling through town, head over to Barker Reservoir for peaceful mountain views and a relaxing walk along the shoreline.

If you have extra time, continue north on the Peak to Peak Scenic and Historic Byway. This beautiful mountain drive winds through dense forests, passes panoramic overlooks, and climbs into even cooler alpine terrain.

Nederland offers the perfect combination of refreshing weather, mountain scenery, and small-town charm—ideal for families, couples, hikers, cyclists, and anyone looking to slow down for a few hours.

3. Rocky Mountain National Park via Estes Park (55–60 Minutes)

For the ultimate summer escape, point your car toward Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park.

As you climb into the Rockies, temperatures often drop 15 to 25 degrees compared to Boulder, replacing hot city air with crisp mountain breezes and spectacular alpine scenery.

Trail Ridge Road—the highest continuous paved road in North America—takes visitors above 12,000 feet through tundra landscapes unlike anywhere else in the country. Wildlife sightings are common, and nearly every overlook provides breathtaking views stretching for miles.

Even if you don’t hike, simply driving through the park provides an unforgettable escape from the Front Range heat.

Plan Ahead

Timed-entry reservations are required during portions of the day throughout much of the summer and early fall. Reservation windows vary by destination, including the Bear Lake Corridor, so check current requirements before leaving. Entering outside reservation hours may allow access without a reservation in certain areas, but always confirm the latest information before your trip.

Bonus Local Option: Boulder Reservoir

If you don’t want to leave town, Boulder Reservoir remains one of the area’s favorite places to cool off.

Its sandy swim beach, designated swimming area, paddleboard and kayak rentals, and incredible Flatirons backdrop make it an easy choice during a heat wave. Lifeguards are on duty throughout the summer season, and the water provides a refreshing escape from the day’s hottest temperatures.

Because it becomes especially popular during heat waves, arriving early is your best bet for parking and a good spot on the beach.

Tips for a Safe Heat Escape

  • Leave early. Morning temperatures are cooler, and parking is much easier.
  • Stay hydrated. Bring more water than you think you’ll need.
  • Pack for changing conditions. Mountain weather can shift quickly, so bring a light jacket even on hot days.
  • Check reservation requirements. Some destinations require timed-entry reservations during peak periods.
  • Watch for afternoon thunderstorms. Lightning is common in Colorado’s high country during summer afternoons.
  • Leave No Trace. Pack out all trash, stay on designated trails, and help preserve these incredible places for everyone.

Cooler Adventures Are Closer Than You Think

One of the best parts of living in Boulder is how quickly you can trade city heat for cool mountain air. Whether you’re swimming beneath sandstone cliffs at Eldorado Springs, enjoying Nederland’s refreshing mountain climate, or exploring the alpine landscapes of Rocky Mountain National Park, relief is never far away.

As this summer heat wave continues, these short road trips provide the perfect excuse to get outside, stay cool, and experience some of Colorado’s most beautiful landscapes—all within an hour of home.
