Boulder’s Protein Powerhouses: Quinoa, Hemp, and Edamame

March 12th, 2024

Welcome to the world of plant-based nutrition, where health meets taste and every meal is an opportunity for nourishment. Whether you’re an athlete, a health enthusiast, or simply curious about plant-based eating, let’s explore three super-sources of complete protein (protein sources that contain all nine (9) essential amino acids that our body needs to build our muscles and tissues but can’t produce on its own). As a plant-based ultra-marathon runner, health coach, and health and wellness researcher and professor, I make my health a priority and these three complete proteins are key... Read More

Faces of Boulder – Pic of the Day!

December 25th, 2023

I sense the amount of time I spend pondering and searching for “my purpose” as abnormal. I return to Paul Graham’s essay, How To Do What You Love, once or twice a month. The segment of Steve Jobs’ legendary Stanford Commencement Speech, Keep Looking, Don’t Settle, is bookmarked to my “revisit often” file. And on my desk sticks a post-it note with, “This is your life. Do what you love, and do it often. If you don’t like something, change it,” from The Holstee Manifesto. Four days before I sat down with Alex Corren, CEO and founder of UnCanny Wellness, over a coffee at Trident... Read More

You Can’t Make This Stuff Up! Cannabis tales to share…

May 12th, 2023

It’s true, you can’t make this stuff up! The cannabis culture is colorful and full of interesting facts and fallacies. Here are a few facts that may tickle your funny bone or leave you scratching your head in confusion. Pot for Sale Online in 1971. The very first online purchase was an undisclosed amount of marijuana between students at two prestigious colleges.  In the early 70’s,  long before eBay and Amazon, students at Stanford University using Arpanet accounts at Stanford University’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, engaged in a commercial transaction with their buddies... Read More

Cannabis for Your Pets

November 17th, 2022

Chances are you have a furry member of your family. All mammals have an ednocannabinoid system to help maintain balance within the body and optimize proper functions.  Your furry friend can provide perks to your overall health and wellness too. This is probably one of the reasons 68 percent of all households in 2017 within the United States own pets.  Playing with animals, especially puppies, has been shown to increase levels of serotonin and dopamine, which are the hormones that make you feel good. When the hormones are released, it helps reduce stress levels and can help improve memory and... Read More

How to add Hemp to Your Thanksgiving

November 25th, 2021

We all know the classic casseroles, stuffings, and desserts, but have you considered adding hemp foods to your menu? For some, hemp foods can be new to cook with, and there isn’t a lot of direction for how to add hemp to your Thanksgiving, until now! Hemp foods are gaining popularity, and becoming much easier to find in stores. Hempsgiving was recently held in Denver, where every item on the menu featured some sort of hemp. The event was such a success, it was picked up by Denver Westword, and the pumpkin cranberry cupcakes with maple cinnamon hemp sprinkles were even featured on LiveKindly!... Read More

Can I Consume Cannabis Before Working Out?

March 28th, 2021

Since cannabis is legal for recreational use in ten states and counting, one of the most common question that comes up is “Can I use cannabis before working out?” The answer is yes. More and more athletes are coming out of the green closet to discuss their cannabis use and how it affects their athletic performance.  Olympian and World Champion Joanna Zeiger, PhD is the founder and coach with Train Away Chronic Pain. She is a cannabis advocate and often discusses how cannabis has helped her manage chronic pain symptoms and provide a restful night’s sleep. Other athletes such as Anna Symonds... Read More

Even Spartans Use Cannabis

January 23rd, 2021

This weekend I will be joining the MJFITNUT Team in taking on my first Spartan obstacle course! My training for this 3-5 mile race, with 15-20 obstacles, has included cannabis, and I will be consuming cannabis on race day. My teammates for this race are also cannabis users. Joining me is my husband Antonio, and Marie Peel, who is a co-owner of Denver’s 420 friendly transportation service, High End Transportation. Peel is an excellent example of a Spartan who uses cannabis. She is a U.S. Navy Veteran who has completed several Spartan Races. She’s even completed the famed Trifecta. Joining the... Read More

Cannabis, Stress, and Mental Health

August 28th, 2020

Having recently made a personal commitment to achieve a better work life balance, I find myself feeling encouraged to talk about stress, mental health, and even share a bit about my own life’s stressors. Mental health is very important, and the stress of life’s bountiful challenges can take a toll on it very quickly. Gary Vaynerchuk is quoted as saying, “Everybody has shit”, and he’s right. We all have our own shit in our lives we have to deal with. It can often be easy to get caught up in it, to the point you may not consider other people are going through their own shit, so keep that... Read More
