And Then There Were Four

May 17th, 2022

And then there were four. Luka Doncic could have defeated the Phoenix Suns by himself, and after a first half in which Doncic scored 27 points, equaling the Suns halftime total, he almost did. Spencer Dinwiddie added 30 points on 11 of 15 shooting. Jalen Brunson chipped in 24 points, and the Dallas Mavericks made 19 of their 39 threes (48.7%) on their way to a lopsided 123-90 game seven victory. The Boston Celtics got 27 points from Grant Williams, 23 from Jason Tatum, and 19 from Jaylen Brown as the team made 22 of their 55 threes (40%) in a game seven route of the Milwaukee Bucks, 109-81. All-Star Weekend

February 22nd, 2022

The reality is that the NBA All-Star Game has an unfair advantage over other professional leagues when it comes to staying authentic. In hockey, the NHL does a nice job breaking plates with the Skills Competition, but a red robin of games played without hip checks is just not hockey. Major league baseball puts on a homerun clinic. But you never care who wins, there are two dozen pitching changes, and you tend to nod off after your favorite player gets replaced after going 0 for 2. And then there is the Pro Bowl where the top five quarterbacks had dinner reservations and couldn’t attend, players... Read More

The Sour Taste of Super Bowl Appetizers

February 8th, 2022

The matchup was determined almost two weeks ago. The Los Angeles Rams would be facing the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI. The teams would have ample days to rest, strategize, and attend press conferences. The fans would have more than enough time to buy cheese dip, preview Super Bowl commercials, and upgrade their big screens. Two weeks can seem like an eternity, but if the Super Bowl is the main course, sports filled us with plenty of hors d’oeuvres while waiting. Tom Brady won’t be playing on Sunday, but he still dominated the news. We had the NBA trade deadline, the NHL All-Star... Read More

Divisional Playoffs Payoff

January 25th, 2022

It was Couch Potato Heaven as the NFL put on a show during last weekend’s Divisional Playoffs. Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow survived being sacked nine times as the Bengals upset Tennessee 19-16. San Francisco blocked a Green Bay punt late in the game on their way to a 13-10 win in Lambeau. The Los Angeles Rams completed a deep pass to Cooper Kupp to avoid another Tom Brady comeback in winning 30-27 over Tampa Bay. And Pat Mahomes outdueled Josh Allen, 42-36 in overtime, with both a flip of the wrist, and a flip of the coin. A look at the crazy games from the past weekend and more. • The sample... Read More

Kyrie Irving – The Man Behind the Mask

January 12th, 2022

Kyrie Irving is hardly the first professional athlete to refuse to be vaccinated. Aaron Rodgers has stumbled through most of the NFL season answering questions about the subject. Novak Djokovic can’t get into Australia after refusing to get his shots. Lamar Jackson, Bradley Beal, Kirk Cousins, and apparently Antonio Brown, all have refused to get vaccinated. But Irving’s situation is a little different. The Brooklyn Nets star has never given a clear reason for why he has chosen not to get vaccinated, explaining it as a personal decision. But the 7-time all-star is an outlier in a league... Read More

Taking Shots at Aaron Rodgers

November 16th, 2021

For a moment it was as if COVID-19 had come and gone.  Thousands of college students filled band-filled stadiums, beer flowed during massive-sized tailgate parties, and Sundays returned to crowded gatherings in musty man caves. True, some venues required masks and others proof of vaccination, but spectators were adapting and sports were officially back.  If sports now meant sitting inches from strangers rather than six-feet or pulling my mask down to drink a beer, I was fine with that. Then Aaron Rodgers brought it all back. Green Bay’s star quarterback stirred up plenty of controversy last... Read More

The Week in Sports – Halloween Edition

November 3rd, 2021

The darkness that is Halloween conjures up many frightful images.  The silence of an empty graveyard, the shadows of creatures that roam, and the fear of things that go bump in the night. The world of sports can be just as scary. Try watching the Colorado Buffaloes compete against Oregon, or the Denver Nuggets without Nikola Jokic.  In Denver, we hide under the blanket when the Broncos are on, and stars like Von Miller and Nolan Arenado can vanish without a trace. A look at the past week in sports – the tricks, and all the treats. Apparently, the only thing scarier than John Gruden’s resemblance... Read More

The Denver Nuggets – Predicting the Western Conference

October 18th, 2021

The NBA season tips off this week and the Western Conference is up for grabs.  The Suns look to shine.  The Lakers added Westbrook and Carmelo.  Golden State is getting the band back together. Doncic is the Mavericks Top Gun.  While the Jazz are sounding smooth. And don’t forget about the Denver Nuggets and their league MVP. The Wild West with its new faces, players returning from injuries, and young talent developing is about as predictable as Kawhi Leonard’s next Clipper game. But here are how the teams will finish when the regular season ends. 1. Utah Jazz – The Jazz bring back almost... Read More

Basketball at The Olympics – The New Dream Team

June 21st, 2021

As Kevin Durant held the ball at the top of the key the entire arena knew what was coming.  Down by two points with just seconds left in a pivotal game seven, Durant went to work. A few dribbles, a spin, a step-back-three, and the crowd erupted. A storybook ending in which Durant single-handedly willed his team to victory by scoring 48 points, including the game-winner, advancing the Brooklyn Nets into the Eastern Conference Final. At least, that is how the story would have gone if it was not for Durant’s size 18 shoes. Instead, an official video review showed that Durant’s mammoth shoes barely... Read More

The Nuggets Get Swept – But in Their Defense…

June 15th, 2021

The Denver Nuggets season came to an abrupt end following Sunday’s 125 -118 loss to Chris Paul and the Phoenix Suns.  The Suns swept the series in four games as Devin Booker, Paul, and a cast full of others dominated the undermanned Nuggets from start to finish. Paul finished with 37 points on 14 of 19 shooting as he continued to dominate the Denver guard trio of Monte Morris, Austin Rivers, and 5’10 Facundo Campazzo.  Booker added 34 points and 11 rebounds as he took advantage of the absent and injured Jamal Murray.  And a frustrated Nikola Jokic was ejected in the third quarter after a... Read More
