Inexpensive Ways to Reduce Stress at CU Boulder

January 31st, 2022

It is that time in the semester when stress spreads like a rampant plague through the ranks of the students at universities. We are right about halfway through the semester, and every week my workload seems to grow heavier and heavier. When I was a freshman in my first semester at college, I had no idea how to cope with this stress. I wish I’d known about some of the options available for students to reduce this anxiety. What I have come to learn is that there are a wide variety of resources available for college students, many of which are quite reasonably priced. Yoga I know how this must... Read More

Get Your Yoga On: 6 Budgeting Tips For An Aspen Yoga-Nature Staycation

October 2nd, 2020

I firmly believe that nature is medicine. There is nothing more rejuvenating than unplugging from the world for a few hours, sifting through trees and allowing silence to be your personal tour guide. What is now commonly referred to as forest bathing, the act of immersing yourself in nature while simultaneously being present to your surroundings, can be a moving meditation in and of itself, much like yoga. In fact, both practices strongly correlate with one another. Practicing yoga or meditating out in dense wilderness reaps positive therapeutic benefits. Imagine hiking through the mountains... Read More

Colorado Yoga Teacher Spotlight: Meet Brett Mehlman

October 2nd, 2020

It’s 6 a.m., and slivers of sunlight peep through the large, elongated windows of Brett Mehlman’s Denver-based studio apartment, greeting him as he begins his morning. A fresh glass of water is the first thing on his mind, followed by a guided meditation. As a busy yoga instructor, an established morning ritual is key for Brett. Preparing for his first client of the day, he concocts a blend of ginger, turmeric, black pepper, and skullcap for tea. “The trick here, is to add coconut milk,” he says with a grin, walking across the plant-lined floor to the kitchen cupboard. “Coconut milk... Read More

Travel Like a Yogi

August 14th, 2020

I’m no Oprah, but I do have a lot of well-known favorite things: puppies, blankets, parks, mountains, warm food . . . And in a ranking of my favorite things, traveling scores highly, while spending time in airports places very low. The combination of sitting still for a long time, falling asleep in strange and uncomfortable places, eating processed food, feeling the effects of dehydration, and generally feeling greasy makes me want to get out immediately. Airport Yoga Rooms Luckily, some sweet humans have built yoga and meditation rooms in a few airports to help out us uncomfortable travelers.... Read More

The Practice of Gratitude

June 10th, 2020

I hear a lot of yoga-related questions throughout the average day: “Am I doing this right?” “What’s a namaste?’ “What do you mean ‘yoga isn’t just a physical practice’?” But my favorite question I’ve ever been asked was beautiful in its simplicity: “What is gratitude?” And my answer is not as simple. Gratitude is an idea and a practice upon which I’ve built much of the last few years of my life. It is an underlying intention from which I live, love, move, and teach. It’s a practice of naming things, people, feelings, and ideas that I am grateful for in my life, and... Read More

Serving Veterans Through Yoga

June 6th, 2020
veteran yoga

Along with petting dogs, hiking mountains, and teaching yoga, one of my favorite things in the whole world is working with veterans. My grandfathers, brother, and dad are all veterans ranging timelines and wars from WWII to Iraq/Afghanistan. While I took the black sheep route and became a yoga instructor instead of enlisting, my family and military roots are extremely important to me. Teaching yoga to veterans became a way to connect my two worlds and give back to the community that has selflessly given so much to all of us. In March 2013, I started a yoga program at the Boulder Veterans Center... Read More

Get Strong and Flexible While Drinking Beer

June 3rd, 2020

Being such a healthy, active city, Boulder is one of those places that makes you want to get out there and try new activities. For me, the most recent addition to my fitness routine has been pilates. I’ve been on the mat doing yoga for a few years now but pilates is a whole other beast, focusing more on intense workouts for the core rather than the overall strength and flexibility associated with yoga. You know what makes an intense core workout all the more bearable? Rolling off the mat and immediately getting a fresh pint of Sanitas beer. That’s right. Sanitas has added craft pilates at the... Read More

Yoga Instructor Spotlight: Ashley O’Connor

May 23rd, 2020

It’s no secret that Boulder is inundated with yoga instructors and studios. If you haven’t been in the yoga scene for long (or at all), this can get overwhelming. What instructor will resonate with me? What kind of class should I try? We’ll talk about different styles of yoga in Boulder later, but for now I’d like to highlight one of my favorite teachers in town, Ashley O’Connor. Ashley is a vinyasa, yin, and hot/hot power fusion instructor at the CorePower Yoga studios in Boulder and Louisville. She is full of light and laughter, knowledge and wisdom. While much of... Read More

Hidden Gems: Come Play At Nederland’s Mountain Yoga Haven

September 27th, 2019

“Let’s begin practice by lying on our backs, with our sacrum and legs extending up against the wall.” The class eagerly responded as such. Nestled into position in the cozily lit room of Nederland, Colorado’s Tadasana Mountain Yoga Studio, I began to relax while simultaneously awaiting the next set of instructions. Kim, our teacher for the morning, gently guided us through the hour-and-a-half-long routine. “Breathe deeply and notice your thoughts. Are they ruminating, or are you present in the given moment? As we move throughout today’s practice, I highly encourage you to leave all... Read More
