Joshua Smith Lead Photojournalist for Faces of Boulder

Joshua is currently a senior attending the University of Colorado at Boulder, and will be graduating in December, with a degree in Psychology, with a very strong focus in Marketing. After being born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, his mother decided to move him to Colorado to further challenge him in academics. In addition to academics, Joshua specializes in photography, creative writing, musical writing, team sports, and social media marketing. Joshua spends as much time as he can on the move, exploring, interviewing people, reading, staying active, and trying to do whatever it takes to win the day. He really likes to think that all people have a story to tell, and these stories can really influence your perspective on life. Joshua believes that art and love is what keeps him alive. Time is not money, it’s priceless!

Humans have always had a complicated relationship with weather. Ancient cultures prayed and made offerings to gods in hopes of receiving conditions conducive to growing crops. Adverse weather, then, was often interpreted as displeasure on behalf of those same beings—a punishment for failing to observe proper rituals. It doesn’t take a history scholar to understand this impulse. Weather, now as then, is both an enemy and ally. On one hand, it provides everything from the raw material for food—sunlight driving photosynthesis, wind the primary method of plants spreading their seeds—to …

Sometimes, writing about art and theater feels a lot like falling down the proverbial rabbit hole as I try to find the angle to write about wandering through a haunted-theater immersive experience, getting splashed in a Halloween horror show in the basement of a spaghetti emporium, sweating through a DIY D&D in a comic shop, savoring (har har!) Sweeney Todd’s enraged high notes, and trying to quiet my howling dog in a public house. I’ve found myself in some odd and awkward scenarios. To update the metaphor, writing this column is a lot like drunk-clicking through an endless algorithm o…

Eva is a 22 year old student that is in Boulder attending a university and I loved interviewing this woman. Costa Rica, located in Central America is where this piece of joy is from. Movement is something that is in her everyday life, because movement makes things happen, movement is satisfying, and quite frankly movement is what has gotten her to Boulder. For example, Eva loves loves loves to snowboard! She feels like its her "flow" and and it's the closest thing she can get to a tropical thrill. As far as I can see Eva is very active and a very driven young lady. Her mom is her biggest role …

"Hello Joshua, I'm from Colorado Springs and I have three sisters and my two older sisters went to CSU for college and when I viewed the campus on my visit there and then compared it to what I viewed at the CU campus, I could already see that I was leaning towards this beautiful university. Honestly, I kind of wanted to do something different from my older sisters, so when I saw Boulder, I just thought this would be a cool and phenomenal place, and it's so beautiful so I figured why not. I think that my favorite thing about Boulder is the people that I've met and see and of course the scenery …

Thomas is 74 years old and is from Denver, Colorado. In the good year of 1962, Thomas decided to move to Boulder. Thomas knew Boulder would be a great place for growth and self realization. It was also a place of career opportunities. Science, being one of his first loves, was also much appreciated at a university such as  CU. He used to be marathon runner, but when he had to stop running, he got himself a road bike to keep me active and getting out in the world. Exercise also! "I Love being outside and being with people. Using the talent God has given me to create art. Interaction with peopl…

Brook was born in Burlington, Vermont, and has been in Boulder for 18 years. Loves the weather and riding his bike. Outdoors and Wilderness comes to mind when he thinks about the life of a resident in Boulder. His future plan is to become fluent in Portuguese, and travel abroad with many safe trips. Keeping Boulder weird is a reason to stay in Boulder for Brook. He feels he adds to the culture and loves it. Summertime is Brook's favorite season in Boulder, Summertime is freedom. And it's HOT! Thanks Brook!

Jamie, the 22 year old from Aspen, Colorado, is a quite interesting young woman. Her passion is photography. Photography that not only pleases the viewer, but also includes and samples in social issues that are not so simple to discuss out loud. She implicitly does art about explicit topics in our society. She's in Boulder to finish her degree, that she hopes will get her into one of her dream art institutes. What she likes about boulder is the way the city and university is a unified community! She enjoys the astonishing atmosphere and support she gets from her peers. Jamie chose to do photog…

Sofi, born and raised in Palo Alto, California. She's 22 years old, and currently attending the University of Colorado @ Boulder. After being in Boulder, she sees that it was much more than she imagined. There's something about Boulder that you can't quite fully explain. Her life quote would be "Live in the moment" and this is because you never know what may happen to you two seconds later, or right now for that matter. This made her decide to come to Boulder because it seems as if everyone lives in the moment here. Simple and Sweet. Thanks Sofi. Boulder appreciates you!

"I was born in Denver, Colorado. and raised in Bethesda, Maryland. I had to make a return home for the lovely scenery of Boulder's outdoors. I'm currently a Junior at CU Boulder. Fitness, health, and music keeps me alive and in Boulder it is vital for me. I'm a performing musician and work at the Colorado Chautauqua association.  One thing for sure is that I am religiously working on becoming a personal trainer.  I try and take advantage of my environment and conquer every day. That's all I know how to do!" Thanks Nate!

Clarissa, born and raised in Houston, TX, has been in Colorado for  7 years now.  She lives with her caring aunt and uncle! Clarissa is really drawn to Boulder because she loves the healthy lifestyle that it promotes, whether it's healthy food, a place to get a great workout, or just walking and biking everywhere to make it around town. "The people here in Boulder are amazing." Kickboxing is Clarissa's cup of tea. She really likes to stay active, and kickboxing is beneficial to her in multiple ways. I found this tough cookie at CU's Rec Center, so be sure to find your fit around town in Boul…

"Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit. Life is going to be full of ups and downs, but for me I keep going everyday for my parents, who have given me all the tools and every opportunity to make sure I get and live the best life I can. Everyday and every second, God gives us another chance to experience new adventures and opportunities. The fact that I know my soul is secure after this life, makes me live for the moment, and enjoy every single aspect of life, the ups and downs, and the sad and good times. I'm here for a reason a…

It's the simple things that matter in life, and the simple things are what makes her smile unconditionally. Nature is three things in her eyes.  1. What you see is what you get.  2. It's all natural  3. There's no bullshit! Thanks Holly Sharps!
