Rachel’s passion for photography began in high school, on a hiking trip into the Great Smoky Mountains. Not only did she realize how much she loved working with a camera, she also realized how much she loved being in the mountains. So in July of 2015, she said goodbye to Baltimore, drove across the country to the gorgeous Colorado Rocky Mountains, and she has never looked back. Currently, Rachel lives in Boulder and works in business development for a Logistics company in Louisville. She graduated from Goucher College in 2013 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science and a minor in chemistry while also competing with the Goucher women’s swim team for four years. She has been a part of numerous photography workshops, focusing her efforts in wildlife and landscape photography all over the country, including the Rockies, Smokies, Yellowstone and Grand Tetons, and Utah. In her free time, Rachel spends most of her time outdoors and in the mountains, hiking, camping, and exploring. She also spends a good amount of her time updating her photography and travel blog website. She believes in following your passions, the power of laughter, and enjoying the simple things in life.

Humans have always had a complicated relationship with weather. Ancient cultures prayed and made offerings to gods in hopes of receiving conditions conducive to growing crops. Adverse weather, then, was often interpreted as displeasure on behalf of those same beings—a punishment for failing to observe proper rituals. It doesn’t take a history scholar to understand this impulse. Weather, now as then, is both an enemy and ally. On one hand, it provides everything from the raw material for food—sunlight driving photosynthesis, wind the primary method of plants spreading their seeds—to …

Sometimes, writing about art and theater feels a lot like falling down the proverbial rabbit hole as I try to find the angle to write about wandering through a haunted-theater immersive experience, getting splashed in a Halloween horror show in the basement of a spaghetti emporium, sweating through a DIY D&D in a comic shop, savoring (har har!) Sweeney Todd’s enraged high notes, and trying to quiet my howling dog in a public house. I’ve found myself in some odd and awkward scenarios. To update the metaphor, writing this column is a lot like drunk-clicking through an endless algorithm o…

This dynamic couple moved to the Boulder area ten years ago after meeting in Seattle and tying the knot. After meeting in college, these two realized that they loved sharing outdoor adventures together and for them, that created an unbreakable bond. After their wedding, they decided they were ready for some new adventures, so they said goodbye to Seattle and hello to Boulder. "Nothing can beat the Colorado Rockies," says Molly, "we see ourselves here for quite some time." You can see their smiles and happiness radiating all the way down the trail. It was a pleasure meeting you both, thank y…

Almost every day, rain (or snow) or shine, Lydia takes her dog, Jack, to Chautauqua Park for some outside play time. Living only a short drive from the park, she has great access to all of the trails and wide open space that the park has to offer. Lydia grew up around Boulder area. She moved to Oregon for a few years for a previous job, but missed the Colorado mountains too much. But after those few quick years, she moved right back to the area, bought a quaint home in North Boulder where she now lives with her husband, her dog, Jack, and her cat. Lydia spends a lot of time outside hiki…

I met Meredith last week at Blue Rose Tattoo parlor on University Hill in Boulder. Meredith moved here from Florida and pursued her passion in body art and piercings. After working in the Denver location for a while, she transferred to the Boulder location and loves it. She loves meeting and talking to new people while doing her job, but what she loves the most about it is that she can leave a positive, lasting memory on someone. Meredith moved to Boulder because she was tired of Florida and tired of the East Coast. She said her favorite things about Boulder are, "low humidity, low judgeme…

There isn't a place Natalie doesn't go without her dog, Bruno. This past weekend, Natalie and Bruno explored the back country of Nederland and enjoyed the warming weather. "Almost every weekend, we spend our days hiking together. He goes everywhere with me," said Natalie. Just like her, Bruno was decked out in his own personal hiking gear - jacket, water bottle, snacks, and toys. Natalie is a teacher from Longmont and is a dog trainer on the side. Besides hiking, she enjoys cooking, reading, and curling up by the fire with a good book. Her ideal Saturday is spend hiking in the mountains w…

Originally from Portland, Oregon, Garrett has always had a love for the mountains and the outdoors. Seven years ago, he relocated with his wife, Julie, to Denver and quickly realized that the city life wasn't for them. After a couple short years in Denver, Garrett and his wife moved to Niwot in Boulder County where they could escape the busy city lifestyle and settle down in the countryside. "I see us staying there for quite some time," he said. Garrett goes hiking, camping, and backpacking on a regular basis with his local friends, and sometimes his wife enjoys tagging along. Spring is right around the corner and this time of year for Boulder is lively and energetic! Luckily, this winter has been a pretty mild one but people like Katie can't wait for the consistent warm weather. Katie is an outdoor enthusiast and avid hiker. She works in retail during the day and bar tends by night and her busy work life balances out with her busy social life. She said her favorite thing about Boulder is the endless amounts of micro brews to check out with family and friends. "Even though I'm working a lot, I love interacting with people and love the jobs I do. So it really doesn't…

Happy Monday, Boulder! Kevin and Andrea spend their Mondays running on the trails in Chautauqua Park. Every morning, they spend a little time together before they both are off to their separate jobs. "We both are very busy, so we make sure to spend a little time together every day doing what we both love to do - running and hiking," says Kevin. Andrea mentioned that they met in college, as cross country runners, and since then have become inseparable. "We keep each other motivated," she said. What a better way to spend time in the mountains, than with the one you admire the most. Thank …

This Portland, Oregon native just moved to Colorado in the middle of January to experience the mountain lifestyle. Meet Allison, an outdoor enthusiast and world traveler! Allison originally knew she was bitten by the travel bug ten years ago right before she started college. She participated in a study abroad program in Copenhagen that allowed her to travel all throughout Europe for 6 months. Since then, Allison took a year to move back to Oregon to pack her things and see her friends and family before she was off to her next destination, San Francisco. A good weekend for this Virginia native consists of spending time in the mountains. Mike, an avid outdoorsman from Williamsburg, Virginia, drove across the country to the Colorado Rockies just over two years ago after graduating from Virginia Tech with a Biology degree. He said moving here was the best decision he could have made and he hasn't looked back. Currently, Mike is living in Firestone with a few of his buddies and his dog, Lucas. You can find him working at the local Boulder brewery and restaurant, BRU Handbuilt Ales & Eats, a great place for delicious, unique beers and gourme…

Meet Brannen, Daniel, Carter, Thomas, Johnny, and Dennis (pictured left to right), the six-member band of FutureBirds. This indie rock band started their career back in 2008 out of Athens, GA and ended up playing at a local show this past Friday and Saturday night. The band is known for their unique country-rock infused sound and high energy shows; those qualities definitely showed this weekend. After the show, Carter, the guitarist/vocalist/multi-instrumentalist, shared a little about himself and the band. "I'm so happy we're here and I'm excited to see where we'll go next," he said. Th…

She leads a very active lifestyle; she loves climbing, hiking, and biking, but her favorite activity is trail running. She started running in high school for her cross country and track team and she said "it just stuck." "For me, running is a way for me to escape to nature for a while and leave any stress behind," she said. Running in the snow doesn't bother her at all. She mentioned that she finds it more refre…

Colder weather and a little bit of snow doesn't stop Jennifer from an afternoon of hiking. Sugarloaf Mountain is one of Jennifer's personal favorite local hikes. "It's super close to Boulder, where I live, and offers amazing views of the Rockies. I do this hike regularly, " she said. The views of Sugarloaf stretch over the vast Plains to the east, the Boulder Group to the southeast, the Indian Peaks to the west, and Longs Peak and Rocky Mountain National Park to the north and northwest. Born in Florida, Jennifer moved here to study at CSU in Fort Collins, then moved to Boulder less than a…

She then moved to Baltimore, Maryland to attend college and decided to stay to start her career. Growing restless, she decided to take a long weekend to see the mountains of Colorado and visit some friends. Immediately, she was blown away by the natural beauty of the area and the amount of places to see and experience. Her favorite thing about Boulder is "the freedom, the fresh air, and the overwhelming desire to explore." In …
