Boulder Date Nights That Will Make You Use Your Noggin

May 20th, 2016

If you are the type of person who likes puzzles and challenges, or you’re looking for a date night that requires active participation, here are two Boulder activities that won’t disappoint. These are great for larger groups (and couples, too). Boulder Enigma Escape Rooms (1426 Pearl St. #020) This is the ultimate Boulder experience for problem-solvers. I recommend going as a group—the more brains the better. You and your friends (up to eight people) are literally locked inside a room for 60 minutes and must follow clues and solve puzzles to get out. (Don’t worry, there’s always... Read More

Featured Artist: Wonderlic

May 6th, 2016

This week, I sat down with Michael Whalen, guitarist and vocalist for Denver-based funk/jam band Wonderlic, to talk about their new album, what it’s like to be a band in this area of the country, and how surprisingly similar jazz and jam bands really are. To backtrack a bit, Wonderlic features Allen Galton on electric mandolin and vocals, Michael Whalen on guitar and vocals, and James Dare on bass. They see a rolling cast of drummers: Ryan Elwood, Zach West, and sometimes the original drummer on their first album, Alejandro Castano. They’re often joined on stage by friends... Read More

Featured Artist: Envy Alo

April 22nd, 2016

Last Friday, I went to see local prog-funk trio Envy Alo at the Boulder House (right next to the Rio), which was once Absinthe House. Throughout the show, I couldn’t help but scrawl names of the artists that I love, whose influence I heard in Envy Alo. I heard a little bit of the Soft Machine, some Pink Floyd layered with bluesy vocals, threads of Surrealistic Pillow, and even a little early Radiohead in there somewhere. What is really striking is the fact that there’s almost a wall of sound effect, yet it comes from only 3 musicians. Envy Alo is Kevin Hinder on guitar, Aaron... Read More

Featured Artist: Flash Mountain Flood

April 7th, 2016

For AboutBoulder’s first featured musician profile, I went to see, and subsequently sat down and chatted with Boulder’s own Flash Mountain Flood! FMF consists of five members: Logan Green (lead guitar, vocals), Wes Rather (rhythm guitar, vocals), Derek Dames (bass, vocals), Paul Copoulos (keys, organ) Taner Clark (drums, percussion). The group is currently in residency at Owsley’s Golden Road on the Hill, a little dive absolutely covered in posters and paraphernalia in homage to the Grateful Dead, and other artists relevant to the psychedelic San Francisco scene of the 1960s (with a lovely... Read More

Remembering Bowie in Denver

January 13th, 2016

Just before heading to bed on Sunday night, I read the shocking and sad news: David Bowie had passed. I now have to reckon with the knowledge that the infinite creative artist, the beautiful mythical creature, the timeless/ageless stranger from the cosmos, was also a mortal man. Of course I’ve been listening to my favorite Bowie songs these past few days (including Starman, The Man Who Sold the World, and Modern Love), as well as downloading my gaps in his discography (he made a lot of music). But I’ve also been reading random articles (like the “nobituary” published... Read More
