Sunday Sunrise Surprise

January 21st, 2024

Sunday Sunrise Spectacular! The Boulder sunrise red can take over the sky! I suspect it is a physiological-sociological phenomenon. If sunrises were not often beautiful, uplifting, inspiring, and colorful, as well as accompanied by coffee, would we ever get out of bed in the morning? Of course we would! But it would not be as easy, would not be as fun, and would certainly not be as colorful! Color For Our Coffee And Boulder is treated to another glorious sunrise, laying down a red carpet for the day to stroll in on! The interplay between color and mood is a fascinating aspect of human perception,... Read More

Balmy Boulder Back to SPRING! BUFFS BACK FRIDAY!

January 18th, 2024

Lensworth Photo How Cold IS negative 10 degrees F, -23 degrees C? 43 Degrees F. 6 deg C. is more than 50 degrees F above our lows of the last couple of days. For perspective, think of that as similar to going from 60 deg F to 110 deg. F. 15 deg C to 43 deg. C. Try BBQ on a day when it is 50 or 60 degrees colder than a summer BBQ!  Try cooking in your oven at 350 deg. F instead of a desired 400 Deg F. BIG DIFFERENCE! Lensworth Photo Now that we know just how cold it was, and just how warm it will be today, let’s continue to be uplifted this morning by the rising sun and by the rising Lady... Read More

Snow Shoveling Controversy in Boulder with Surround Sound Shovels

January 16th, 2024

I am sensitive to snow shoveling in Boulder. My Grandmother taught that if you did not have a strong brain you’d better have strong legs. I have weak thighs!  I have to rely upon my brain. Some think that presents me with a huge hurdle.  I have experienced some rather dramatic health challenges, and at 72 I have to treat myself as being a person at higher risk for a cardio-vascular event. So for me, snow shoveling presents several hazards. First, at 72 with health issues, shoveling can be dangerous (not difficult, just dangerous) in several ways. Obviously, snow varies. It can be dry powder... Read More

Bitter Boulder Buff Arctic Blast

January 16th, 2024

Winter frigid mornings in Boulder, land of the BUFFS, look different, feel different and sound different. It even smells different. The snow crunches underfoot, our breaths are frosty, and early risers are in for a bit of a cold shock! Of course extra care for bikes and cars is mandatory. Care for the machinery and care in the operation! Avoid skidding, and DO NOT FALL DOWN! Our Fellow Boulderites, and fellow BUFFS are quite brilliant at dressing for weather like what we have today. We a professionals at staying warm and dry whether we are in town or another mile higher. We take our cold very... Read More

Forecasting Boulder’s Winter: Lenworth’s Chilling Revelation

January 14th, 2024

Boulderites KNOW that only fools and tourists predict Boulder weather. That used to be true. I believe or at least strongly suspect that the extreme weather we’ve been seeing worldwide is the result in most significant part of climate change. Floods, rains, high temps, low temps, snow amounts, glaciers melting, and on and on. Short term or long term the current trend is beyond question getting more extreme. Our own NCAR and NOAA are at the heart of study of weather and of course more. NO surprise that both are in Boulder. NCAR is an architectural gem in Boulder, and is featured in Woody... Read More

Fern Walls and Junkos for Christmas?

December 23rd, 2023

Photo Lensworth         Fern Wall on the  Divide shouting “impending snow.” Boulder’s fern walls and juncos (the bird) are our own Boulder harbingers of snow. Photo Lensworth    Black-eyed Junco, predictor of snow, ground-feeder. The Black-Eyed Junco has a dark top half and a light bottom half. Boulder welcomes them with open arms, since moisture is probably close on the heels of the bird. While we rarely see them “normally,” we see them in significant numbers a day or two before it snows. To show off, you must learn the Latin name of the Black-Eyed Junco. Junco hyemalis.... Read More

Cold Brew Season

April 8th, 2015

Despite the ridiculous snowfall last week, it is officially iced coffee season here in Colorado. While I prefer hot coffee, I do occasionally thirst for a refreshing iced coffee on hot and sunny days. Because I usually drink iced coffee the way I drink regular coffee—with no milk or sugar—I find most conventional iced coffee to be bitter. Sometimes I add coconut water to my iced coffee to make it tastier—which I totally thought was a brilliant and unique idea until I discovered that it was not. But there are a few iced coffees I find light and nuanced in flavor, without adding anything to... Read More
