Epic Views Above Boulder: A Summit Day on Green Mountain
Picture of the Day: Boulder’s Backyard Beauty from the Top of Green Mountain
Some hikes just take your breath away—literally and figuratively. Today’s Picture of the Day comes from the summit of Green Mountain, one of Boulder’s most iconic peaks, offering panoramic views of the Front Range and beyond. If you’ve ever made it to the top, you’ve likely stood next to the Panoramic Peak Finder, a circular metal disc that marks the names and elevations of surrounding peaks—Longs Peak, Bear Peak, Mount Audubon, and more.
How to Get There: Trailhead Directions
To start your Green Mountain adventure, head to Chautauqua Park, located at: Baseline Road & 9th Street, Boulder, CO 80302
From there, you have a couple of options to reach the summit:
-
Gregory Canyon Trailhead: Park just west of Chautauqua near the end of Baseline Road. The Gregory Canyon trail is well-shaded and offers a steady climb.
-
Saddle Rock Trailhead: Also accessed from Chautauqua, this route joins the E.M. Greenman Trail and offers dramatic views and rock features.
Distance: Approx. 6.4 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: Around 2,500 feet
Estimated Time: 3–4 hours round trip, depending on pace
Both trails merge with the E.M. Greenman Trail and finally the Green Mountain West Ridge Trail for the final ascent to the summit.
What to Expect on the Trail
This hike isn’t a casual stroll—it’s a leg burner. But what you get in return is pure Boulder magic. You’ll move through shaded forests, pass boulder fields, and gain altitude with every switchback. As you near the summit, the trees part and you’re greeted with a wide-open panorama of the Indian Peaks, Boulder far below, and the metal Panoramic Peak Finder that orients you to dozens of mountain landmarks.
Summit Safety Tips
