Monday Sunset At Sunrise Boulder-Style, Warm Weather Travel

Sunset Point at Sunset                                         photo Lenny Lensworth Frieling

Boulderites travel.  Summer and winter, North and South and all points in between. My rationalization for posting a sunset picture at sunrise is simple. Sunset in one place means it IS sunrise in another. I suppose that if you are a “flat earther” this presents some problems in perspective, but these are not my problems!  So I am taking the liberty of blogging with a sunset, at sunrise. Additionally, eating too many edibles can result in waking up 12 hours later than planned! Caution is advised as always with edible dosage. I suppose I have to post a sunrise at sunset tonight. We’ll see <G> This blog is about  color, butterflies, moths, and more. If we cannot have some fun on a Monday morning it would be a sad commentary indeed.  While traveling recently to Northern Florida I had the good fortune to be in the right place at the right time. Sunset Point at sunset!

We Boulderites take pictures. Supported by our local camera shops and fellow photographers and friends, we take cameras with us and we take a lot of pictures. The crazy high quality of phone cameras has turned us all into photographers! Instead of a select few with great fancy cameras, we have a world of people who suddenly have excellent cameras in their pockets, and we call it a “cell phone.”

At the Butterfly Pavilion yesterday I saw people taking phone pics of butterflies, with the photographers ranging in age from about 8 years old to as old as me and older. Selfies would have been of one person after another smiling at the variety of shapes, sizes, and for me, colors of the moths and butterflies.

Reactions of the youngest ranged from terror at being surrounded by flying things, brushed by butterflies, mauled by moths, to the wonder  of discovery that children carry with them like loose change.

Butterflies are apparently comfortable with plants matching in color. I almost wore a fluorescent lime green T shirt to the Butterfly Pavilion yesterday, and decided that the color would result in possible reactions from the  butterflies and moths. While I was willing to risk the obvious dangers, I decided on an earth tone flannel shirt. The browns in the shirt apparently demonstrate the attraction of at least this little guy to like-colors.

It rode on my shoulder for at least a half hour as I strolled through the “forest,” and finally was gently lifted off by a staff volunteer. This fascinating young man explained that butterflies TASTE through pads on their feet. When human finger oils contact the “taste pads” the butterfly’s life can be shortened. The volunteer was wearing plastic covers on a couple of fingers so that he could safely put the erstwhile hitchhiker back onto a plant. He also showed us the carnivorous pitcher plants which were quite at home in the jungle environment. The largest of the pitcher plants are big enough to eat small birds! These are not your average Venus flytraps.  The ones in the Pavilion were about 2″ or under a centimeter in height. They successfully propagate these fascinating plants in the Pavilion.
