Sober Buffs 101: A CU Boulder Freshman Guide

Welcome to Boulder, new Buffs.

The Flatirons are waiting, the trails are calling, and campus is about to hit full volume. For many incoming freshmen, college social life can seem automatically connected to drinking and partying.

It doesn’t have to be.

At the University of Colorado Boulder, students looking for another path have something valuable already waiting for them: SoberBuffs.

What Is SoberBuffs?

SoberBuffs is a CU Boulder student organization that celebrates sober and healthy living while hosting substance-free social events for the university community.

And here’s an important distinction for freshmen: you do not have to identify as being in recovery to participate.

CU Boulder says SoberBuffs events are open to anyone interested in sober fun, provided attendees are sober when they arrive. Some activities require at least 48 hours of sobriety for safety reasons.

That makes SoberBuffs useful not only for students committed to sobriety, but also for students who are sober-curious, cutting back, taking a break or simply looking for something different to do.

The organization’s philosophy is centered around finding adventure, excitement and connection without substances.

And in Boulder, there are plenty of ways to do exactly that.

Hiking, Climbing, Skiing and Clear Mornings

SoberBuffs has promoted activities ranging from hiking, climbing and camping to bowling, yoga, cookouts, game nights, movies, study groups and workouts.

The group also lists ski and snowboard trips, mountain biking, sports nights and substance-free tailgating among the kinds of activities students can enjoy.

That combination fits Boulder remarkably well.

This is a city where an early Saturday can mean hiking beneath the Flatirons, running along Boulder Creek, climbing, cycling or heading into the mountains.

In fact, Boulder’s broader sober and sober-curious community has increasingly become part of the city’s wellness-oriented lifestyle.

For a freshman, that creates an important alternative: your social life does not have to disappear just because alcohol isn’t part of it.

Why Finding Your Community Early Matters

The opening weeks of freshman year move quickly.

Roommates meet roommates. Friend groups begin forming. Clubs start recruiting. Students figure out where they belong.

That makes the beginning of the semester a particularly good time to explore communities that match the college experience you actually want.

Instead of waiting until you feel disconnected from the traditional party scene, try something different immediately.

Attend a SoberBuffs event.

Ask somebody to hike.

Join a workout.

Go bowling.

Try climbing.

Meet people over coffee instead of drinks.

The goal isn’t to define the rest of your college career during your first month. It’s simply to discover that there are many ways to build a social life at CU Boulder.

CU Boulder Has a Larger Recovery Community, Too

SoberBuffs is connected to a larger campus resource: the CU Collegiate Recovery Community.

The CUCRC provides community, peer connection, meetings, substance-free events and other support for CU Boulder students, faculty and staff who are in recovery or seeking recovery.

Its campus space is located in the University Memorial Center and gives students a place to connect, study, eat lunch or simply spend time with others in the community.

Students interested in a deeper level of recovery support can also explore CORE Membership and CORE Housing.

CORE Membership is designed for students demonstrating a personal commitment to recovery and active participation in practices that support it.

Eligible CORE members can also apply for CU’s sober housing program. CUCRC currently states that six months of continuous sobriety from alcohol and other drugs is preferred for CORE Housing.

For information, students can contact the CU Collegiate Recovery Community at cucrc@colorado.edu or 303-492-9642.

Five Tips for Sober or Sober-Curious Freshmen

1. Start Early

Don’t wait until October to find your people. Try a SoberBuffs activity during the opening weeks of school and see who you meet.

2. Use Boulder as Your Playground

You landed at a university surrounded by extraordinary outdoor recreation. Hiking, running, biking, climbing and exploring give students natural ways to connect without alcohol being the centerpiece.

3. Find Your Own Version of College Fun

Some students love parties. Others would rather be on a trail at 7 a.m.

Neither experience has to define everybody else’s.

4. Know Where the Resources Are

Even if you never need formal recovery support, knowing that the CUCRC exists can matter—for you, a roommate or a friend.

5. Give Yourself Permission to Change

CU Boulder recognizes multiple paths to recovery and healthier living, including sobriety, abstinence and moderation. You don’t need to decide today what your relationship with alcohol will look like four years from now.

You can simply decide what feels right today.

A Different Kind of Buff Experience

College is short, and the friendships and habits built during these first months can influence the experience that follows.

SoberBuffs offers something deceptively simple: proof that students don’t have to choose between adventure, friendship and a clear head.

You can hike.

You can climb.

You can camp.

You can ski.

You can dance, laugh, tailgate, watch movies, work out and meet people.

And when the sun comes up over the Flatirons the next morning, you can be ready for another Boulder day.

For some new Buffs, that might turn out to be one of the best decisions of freshman year.

Welcome to Boulder. Welcome to CU. And remember: there is more than one way to be a Buff.
