On the Death of a Stranger

September 27th, 2016

A girl I knew in high school posted childhood pictures of the two of them, without caption or commentary, and the grainy stills did not sit well with me. Her intention, it was unspokenly clear, was more than reminiscent. A cursory web search of his name returned first a years-old news story from the town in which we all grew up, detailing his arrest after having fallen through the ventilation system of the administrative building of a local housing development, his afterhours violation neither validated nor explained in its absurdity by the article. The image was so quintessentially Kyle – an... Read More

To My Dearest Boulder, Part II: We Need To Talk

September 13th, 2016

So far in my adult life, I have lived in some of the country’s most expensive places. In Manhattan, where I first went to school, I was on a fairly generous scholarship from the university I attended, and was thusly shielded from many of New York’s financial perils, but they were always in full view beyond my walls. In Honolulu, I broke my body waiting tables, and then eventually donned a tie for the State, moving papers from one side of my desk to the other, a white-shirted picket in the bureaucratic fence. I got by. And now I find myself in Boulder, a city that is certainly by no means cheap.... Read More

Faces of Boulder – Pic of the Day!

April 1st, 2016

“I know how to turn away from the wrong crowd. When I had to leave my church, it was a Pentecostal church, and I left one night and they had weapons in the church and everything. They were going to try and hurt me. I left right on time. I got in the car, me and my dog, and we took off. They were a cult. I could feel the pressure of their pressure system, so I just took off…We never went back to those people again. It taught me to find the right group of people to be with.” -Lisa Powers  Read More

Faces of Boulder – Pic of the Day!

March 12th, 2016

“I want to spend as much time as possible living in foreign countries. That has been the best and most amazing thing I have done in my life so far…That’s what my goal really is, to see as much as possible. It saddens me how we have this one beautiful sphere of life in a vast ocean of nothingness. We are on a rock spinning around a ball of fire and we can’t appreciate that enough to not kill our planet. But I am hopeful; I think there is a lot of good stuff happening.” -Patrick Glynn  Read More

Faces of Boulder – Pic of the Day

January 13th, 2016

Rob Levy moved with his wife and two young children to Boulder just over four years ago from New York.  Like so many transplants, he was drawn to Boulder’s nature and easy living. He says that they wanted to shift their lifestyle from concrete to grass. From skyscrapers to mountains. Coming to Boulder gave Rob the freedom to expand. He says, “There’s something very beautiful about a restart in life. In NY, I was involved in coaching and I owned a high end woodworking company. The outdoor activities were few and far between. I felt like life was passing me by.” Fast forward and his days... Read More

Success is a Values Game

August 26th, 2015

Every decision in life is informed by your values. The more conscious you are of those values, the more satisfied and successful you will be. For example, if you’re going out to grab a quick lunch in Boulder: Is your impulse to get Fast Food– maybe because you value convenience, you love the taste, or you’re on a budget? Or would you be more likely to go get something from a store like Alfalfa’s– because it’s healthier, it’s local, or your friends hang out there? As much as our values influence our lives, it’s common for them to play more of a subconscious... Read More

Fully-Focused, Man.

August 24th, 2015

“I’m fully-focused, man, my mind on my money, my money on my mind, got a mill’ out the deal, and I’m still on the grind.” 50-cent Have you ever been completely “in the zone”? What does that feel like? You feel invincible, unbeatable and unstoppable. You are dialed-in. Nothing can distract you from the task at hand. I’ve felt this in the middle of an engineering exam. I’ve felt this on the baseball field. I’ve even felt this shooting 3-pointers in the middle of a basketball game. Nothing could stop the basketball from going in the basket. How do you recreate these feelings to... Read More

The Easy Way Out

July 13th, 2015

Just the other day I overheard an older gentleman talking about somebody he knew who had an impressive college degree from a very prestigious institution who was apparently, “taking the easy way out”. The young man that he spoke of was working a dead-end night job somewhere for very little pay. The job was barely getting him by and apparently, he wasn’t “using” his college degree. He was a failure to this older gentleman. This kid was apparently “afraid” to pursue a career in the field that he had studied in school. The man continued, saying that this young man wanted to release... Read More

Missy J: The Fairy Godmother of Natural Candy

July 7th, 2015

Hard-working, innovative, and creative entrepreneurs are not your average joes. But in Boulder, they seem to be around every corner. The start-ups I’ve encountered each week have been full of excited, hard-working and inspirational people that will all say the same thing about their business: “We are still a small company, and we have our values”. And despite sales and outreach being far from small, each remains humble and driven to stick to the Boulder-esque natural food company ideals. Oddly enough, “just around the corner” is quite literally where I ran into Jodi Feinhor-Dennis,... Read More
