By Adrienne Markey, University of Colorado 2025 Graduate  Growing up, I spent weekends skiing in Winter Park, Colorado. My love for the sport eventually led me to the Competition Center, where I first heard of Ellie Huff, the big-mountain skier with beautiful doodles on her Kinco mittens. I knew of Ellie as a talented skier and artist, and discovered her project, Novia, through our mutual ski buddies.  Later, at CU, I started working with Shredder Ski School, an indoor ski school where I coached kiddos ranging from 1 to 11 years old. At Shredder, I got to work with nervous little girls…

We've recently been treated to shockingly bright and colorful sunsets and sunrises. Last night, 12-14, we were treated to a more subtle banding of red over a blue sky. In the interest of transparency (pun intended) this sunset photo is slightly enhanced to bring out the banding in the red stripes which treated us.  The air in front of the front range is known for dangerous flying. A band of updraft follows a band of downdraft and that pattern repeats. Pilots unaware of this phenomenon get caught in a downdraft without knowing that simply moving over can put them into a band of updraft. While …

Dummy Got Your Tongue

When I first started as a film critic, I had close to zero problems writing a bad review. My calculus was simple; if you make a film and release it for public consumption, you should be prepared for positive and negative reactions. When I first started as a film critic, I had close to zero problems writing a bad review. My calculus was simple; if you make a film and release it for public consumption, you should be prepared for positive and negative reactions. You worked really hard on a project and people don’t like it? Hey, them’s the breaks. Plus, if I’m being honest with you, there was a low, cruel kind of pleasure I’d get trashing a movie. Coming up with the right zinger, the right snide remark.  Over time, my perspective changed, mostly due to some bright spots in my screenwriting career. An up close loo…

Boulder is famous for its sunrises. The fiery skies, the golden light on the Flatirons, the feeling that anything is possible before the day begins. But when the sun slips behind the mountains and the air cools, Boulder reveals a different kind of beauty—one that’s quieter, calmer, and just as powerful. After dark, the city exhales. The daytime buzz fades, the trails empty, and the streets soften into a gentle glow. Pearl Street lights twinkle instead of dazzle. Conversations slow. Footsteps echo just enough to remind you that you’re not alone, even when it feels wonderfully still. Bou…

Lensworth sunsets here! December Sunsets  are always familiar and never the same. They are always uplifting and always shifting. When someone says "hey, look at this sunset," do NOT wait. They change instant by instant and are part of the reason we need a camera within reach. I go out night after night thinking, “I’ve seen this one before.” And then the sky politely proves me wrong. Th…

Let’s talk about that delicate dance between good cheer and good judgment. The holidays bring out the best in us: warmth, music, lights, friends, and the clink of glasses. They also bring out a classic seasonal combo that has been tempting fate for generations. Entertainment and alcohol mix easily. Add a touch of cannabis to the blend, and suddenly New Year’s Eve earns its nickname of amateur's night all over again. The risks are real, and the good news is that they’re almost entirely avoidable with a little planning and a bit of Lensworth-style common sense. Start with the drinks we te…
