January 7th, 2024

M: “[Home is] where you feel like you should be at the moment… where you are exercising your gifts the most.” D: “Yeah, it is where you develop the most relationships that give you a sense of drive, where those relationships you form show you that they hold a lot of potential. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, Mexican Life Brought Life To Their Style And Style To Their Lives

December 27th, 2023

Frida Kahlo Immersion Mirrors     Photo Lensworth Boulder‘s spectacular location is in itself an art immersion. It puts us right on the the road to special events like the Frida Kahlo immersion exhibit. In a clear example of “derivative art,” this photo captures the artistic eye of the artist as captured by the photographer in the moving mirrors. The timing was difficult, requiring luck, synchronicity, and free film chips. We can imagine Diego Rivera, her stormy husband and also a brilliant artist in the reflection on the right.Artist Kahlo’s Husband Diego... Read More

Moving to Colorado from Arkansas, Madii is a true to the bone theater gal. Not only has she been able to spend more time with her family, she has also fallen in love with the mountains, Denver, and the theater scene— which says “is not too big, but IS fabulous.” A seamstress by day, Madii spends her free time hiking with friends or out on the town at local pubs, restaurants, and markets. Through crafting and sewing Madii hopes to “help other people’s dreams and visions come true.” Thank you Madii!  Read More

Faces of Boulder – Pic of the Day!

October 17th, 2023

Every face has its own story, but this one tells two. This is a true face of Boulder, Colorado. A face that can always be found downtown. A face that has its own spirit and lives as part of another. A face that really is a window to the soul. This isn’t only the face of a man wise beyond his years; this is part of Boulder’s collective, figurative “face”. A character that gives Boulder some of its own character. This face tells a story of the people who live here. People who are creative, active, and appreciative. People with depth. People who welcome creations such as this one into the... Read More

Finding Their Voices: How Art Empowers Youth to Express Themselves and Change the World

August 4th, 2023

I grew up surrounded by art.  My father was born in Italy and was inspired by nature to become an artist. Growing up in New Jersey surrounded by a large Italian family and guided by a strong German mother, I would sit and paint with him as he meditated on the inspiration coming to him. Through all of the up and down times we went through, we could always come back to art and immerse ourselves in imagination and creativity.  It is one of the things that kept me grounded as a child. Art can be an expression of the beauty of life. Young people today are challenged to feel connected to this as the... Read More

6 Weird and Unique Boulder Laws

May 13th, 2023

When oddly specific things become public problems, local legislation steps in to help. Today we will look at a few odds and ends Boulder city laws had to smooth out over the years. Hopefully we will boost today’s water cooler conversations. Nobody Owns Fifi Dogs in Boulder do not have “owners” according to any public ordinances. You can only be the “guardian” of a dog. This law requiring all public signage to call dog owners “guardians” is the result of animal rights activist calling for reform in the rhetoric surrounding pet relationships. It’s... Read More

FLASHBACK: From Canvas to Streets– Street Art in Boulder

March 10th, 2023

Recently, walking around Boulder and taking in the sites, I’ve noticed an ample amount of street art, most notably drawn/painted/stenciled by SMiLE, an anonymous Boulder artist. SMiLE’s repertoire ranges from portraits of Jack Kerouac and Brad Pitt, to a menagerie of animals, most especially cats. A little less than a year ago SMiLE had an exhibition in Boulder titled ‘Streets to Canvas’, and made a profound statement on the website promoting the event. SMiLE states, “Art has always been in the vanguard of the worlds changing consciousness, and Street Art is the contemporary form of this... Read More

Faces of Boulder – Pic of The Day ~ Derek!

August 16th, 2022

Originally from Colorado, Derek spends a lot of his precious time as a painter! His passion comes from many places, one is compassion, because he feels the need to respond to a lot of the people that he’s associated with at work because they need him in a lot of ways. Another is his love for arts and creative expression. It’s very motivating to explore consciousness in London. When he projects himself in the future, he would like to be a professional artist, and exclusively own an art community house, where everybody chips in. Enough individuals that rent is cheap and it makes it... Read More

Faces of Boulder – Pic of the Day

June 27th, 2022

This is Shammai, a sophomore at CU. Shammai was taking a break from her ceramics class to bask in the unusually warm sun outside of the VAC. Despite being in the Art and Sciences school she is till undecided. She has dabbled in woodwork, metal work, pottery and print making. I asked her where she’s from and she gave me an interesting answer. She said that after high school she took a gap year to move to Dresden in Germany to teach english to preschool kids. She lived there for about a year before returning to America to start school. I am myself weighing up my options post graduation... Read More

Faces of Boulder- Pic of the Day!

Meet Jade! Jade is from Lyons, Colorado but is living in Boulder while earning his Art and Japanese degrees.  Jade says that his degrees are very complimentary because he can use his knowledge and technique from Japanese to enhance his art and vice versa!  Jade’s focus in art is mainly painting and drawing and uses watercolors to achieve his Japanese inspired aesthetic.  His work is arranged in a style much like comic books, however excludes dialog to leave room for interpretation. The main themes Jade uses are existentialism as well as introspection to show the wide range of human thought.  Read More
