Float

October 25th, 2016

We crossed under the gate in the chain-link fence and onto the tarmac, which was dotted with small planes. The day was clear and filled with a low wind, and that spot on the earth was open and so clearly a point of ejection into everything surrounding it. The sky was blank and ended only with my sight. Ours was lone and well-worn, and he circled it with discernment and determined love, fatherly and shrewd. This was the vessel, after all, in which we would be reading the laws of nature and reinterpreting them for ourselves, flight as man’s elasticity clause. I don’t think he had ever even set... Read More

On the Death of a Stranger

September 27th, 2016

A girl I knew in high school posted childhood pictures of the two of them, without caption or commentary, and the grainy stills did not sit well with me. Her intention, it was unspokenly clear, was more than reminiscent. A cursory web search of his name returned first a years-old news story from the town in which we all grew up, detailing his arrest after having fallen through the ventilation system of the administrative building of a local housing development, his afterhours violation neither validated nor explained in its absurdity by the article. The image was so quintessentially Kyle – an... Read More

To My Dearest Boulder, Part II: We Need To Talk

September 13th, 2016

So far in my adult life, I have lived in some of the country’s most expensive places. In Manhattan, where I first went to school, I was on a fairly generous scholarship from the university I attended, and was thusly shielded from many of New York’s financial perils, but they were always in full view beyond my walls. In Honolulu, I broke my body waiting tables, and then eventually donned a tie for the State, moving papers from one side of my desk to the other, a white-shirted picket in the bureaucratic fence. I got by. And now I find myself in Boulder, a city that is certainly by no means cheap.... Read More

August, Die She Must

September 6th, 2016

She stole the very beauty from the earth. He would try to continue to find it, but on the long drive through the canyon that morning, one that he never felt compelled to rush and instead enjoyed reveling in the less-touched pieces of land beyond the city, he could only speed, passing each car and feeling disgusted by the perfect trails of clouds, trails he would often look at as threads of heaven spun over the earth, feeling today that they looked instead like claw marks made by the hand of his own ache, raked across the face of God. The bright plumage of the Aspen forests and the rivers normally... Read More

Fear of the Fall

August 30th, 2016

I have a fear of heights, have had it as long as I can remember. I suppose that it’s more appropriate to say that I have a fear of falling, as the state of being up off the ground itself doesn’t really bother me. Years ago, when I visited the Eiffel Tower and was walking around the first landing, I felt no discomfort until I actually stood at the railing in order to see the city, a view of Paris that you can get nowhere else, and rather than focusing on the mesmerizing sprawl of tumultuous urban romance laid out before me, I could only see in a single vector directed straight at the pavement... Read More

Faces of Boulder- Pic of the Day!

October 27th, 2015

Meet Mercedes! She is a fourth grade teacher and decided to take a small (much needed) weekend vacation to Boulder! Her first time in the city, she was blown away by the quirkiness and hospitality she experienced here.  Grabbing drinks and a game of pool, she was spending her afternoon hanging out at the Dark Horse. “Of course, Boulder’s natural beauty is iconic, but I have fallen in love with the small-town, friendly feel and the strong environmentalism I see here.  I have also enjoyed the wonderful restaurants with the world class dishes.  And the people definitely make Boulder... Read More
