A Think Tank With a Twist

December 4th, 2014

Frustrated by the lack of success at traditional networking events, Toma Bedolla, Colin Adair and Tim Williams founded House of Genius in November 2010. Simply put the organization is an innovative think tank for entrepreneurial road blocks facing businesses today. Global Director Jacqui Dietrich describes the process as, “transforming networking into interactions that help entrepreneurs meet their challenges with greater success.” This is how it works: once a month 15-18 people sitting conference-room-style listen as three businesses present problems to be solved. After the geniuses hear them... Read More

You Can’t Spell Startup without Boulder

November 20th, 2014

Boulder is bursting with startups; from restaurants to big data and tech companies, we all know someone who is involved in a fledgling business. When it comes to startups though the question asked so often is, why Boulder? Its obvious why Boulder is a great place to live: its home to a well-respected university, sits below unique natural surroundings, and carries plenty of cultural clout. What isn’t clear is why it’s a haven for entrepreneurs. Out of all the mighty hubs of capitalism in the U.S. why is a relatively small, extremely liberal city the center of lucrative capitalistic ventures? Many... Read More

Solar Roadways Now Hiring!

May 27th, 2014

This was a weekend for celebrations: Memorial Day across America; the Bolder Boulder and Boulder Creekfest in Boulder; and — especially for co-founders Julie and Scott Brusaw in Idaho — a successful Indiegogo campaign for Solar Roadways. As of this writing, the campaign, which sought $1m in crowdfunding, has received $1.4m, with five more days to go before deadline. That’s big news with big implications. On paper, Solar Roadways could solve, well, most of our most seemingly unsolvable issues. According to the company’s estimates, replacing the current asphalt- and concrete-based... Read More

At the age of nine, a tumor was found in Kayla Armstrong’s brain, and she was diagnosed with cancer. She returned to the hospital for MRI scans for a period of two years before doctors could finally declare her cancer free. Her father, Mike Armstrong, described Kayla as being positive throughout the entire strenuous process and praised her for maintaining the “best... Read More

Boulder County Flood Relief

September 24th, 2013

After facing the devastating floods that began on September 11, the result of an eight-day period in which The National Weather Service reported between 7 and 18 inches of rain, Boulder County has maintained its resolve and continues to rebuild. After the natural disaster, which destroyed approximately 2,000 homes, cut off entire towns, and washed away countless roads, hundreds of people were reported to be missing or unaccounted for. That number diminished quickly, however, as people checked in to authorities and on Tuesday, it was reported that the final six missing people were found to be safe. Of... Read More

Recovering from the Flood

September 20th, 2013

After the disastrous floods which lasted from September 11 through September 15, Boulder County has officially been designated a Federal Disaster Area. According to CNN, there have now been seven confirmed fatalities and approximately 18,000 homes across the state have seen damage. Nearly 200 miles of state highways will need to be repaired along with many more miles of local roads. It’s been estimated that repairing all of the damage may end up costing businesses, homeowners, and local governments up to two billion dollars. Here in Boulder, Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle has said that... Read More

Facing the Flood

September 13th, 2013

It all began on Wednesday evening, around sundown, when the rain started dumping. Forget cats and dogs, this was lions and bears. I was heading back from a friend’s house and remember thinking that the raindrops were so big and coming down so hard that it felt more like hail than rainfall. After being outside for only about a minute I was as drenched in water as if I’d just climbed out of a swimming pool. The heavy rain kept up and continued throughout the night and all the way through Thursday. So far, we’ve recorded six to eight inches of rainfall and nearly every waterway... Read More
