At 35 miles and 10,500 ft vertical gain, the out-and-back traverse provides a long day of physical and emotional ups and downs — not unlike life itself. As a health coach, I find my tools for achieving success on ultra-marathon mountain runs like the Boulder Skyline Traverse apply equally well to life’s often challenging and trying ups and downs. It has been used for centuries by Hindu and Buddhist practitioners to cultivate attention, insight, and spirituality (1,2). More recently, meditation has been adopted and adapted by Western science and medicine as a way to enhance well-being, reduce stress, and improve health (1). Why Meditate? Is it worth the hype? There is a growing body of evidence that supports the benefits of meditation for various physical and mental conditions, including (3-6): Alzheimer’s Disease. Anxiety. Cardiovascular... Read More

Trevor Hall and the Law of Attraction

September 23rd, 2015

Songwriter Trevor Hall is playing Boulder this week and I heard a recent story about him that reveals new insights about the law of attraction. The law of attraction became big with the book and film “The Secret” and teachings by many “gurus” claiming that by focusing your energy on what you want you will “attract” it into your life. Trevor Hall is an uplifting singer songwriter who has time and again chosen to elevate his spiritual path as the driver for his art. He recently finished an album “KALA” filled with inspirational songs, and was preparing to leave on a global tour... Read More

Is Cooperative Living Illegal in Boulder?

September 16th, 2015

Last night, a new movement launched at Boulder City Council advocating for housing policies that support affordable housing and cooperative living. The city of Boulder has an occupancy ordinance that limits the number of “unrelated” adults living in a single-family home to a maximum of three or four. This means that if a house has five bedrooms, it is officially illegal for each bedroom to be rented by one or more unrelated people. The city council has been reviewing this ordinance, and there is a proposal to increase the fines and regulations to further bolster this occupancy policy–including... Read More

Success is a Values Game

August 26th, 2015

Every decision in life is informed by your values. The more conscious you are of those values, the more satisfied and successful you will be. For example, if you’re going out to grab a quick lunch in Boulder: Is your impulse to get Fast Food– maybe because you value convenience, you love the taste, or you’re on a budget? Or would you be more likely to go get something from a store like Alfalfa’s– because it’s healthier, it’s local, or your friends hang out there? As much as our values influence our lives, it’s common for them to play more of a subconscious... Read More
