Faces of Boulder – Pic of the Day!

March 22nd, 2019

Jack and his friends were enjoying a nice day outside. They’re all students at CU and told me that they like to get away from campus sometimes. Every now and then it’s good to change your surroundings and take a breath of fresh air. Something about the wilderness in Colorado makes it easy to refresh. Jack and his friends are thankful to be so close to landscapes as beautiful as the one pictured. Boulder is a great place for people to get outside and take advantage of the nice weather. This day in particular was celebrated with food and music in a beautiful setting.  Read More

Nick is in love with the ski and snowboard industry. Ever since moving to Boulder a couple of years ago, he has loved the laid back culture and positive vibes that surround the ski and snowboard world. When Nick was hired by Deviation, a Denver based ski and snowboard company, he told me he couldn’t have been happier. He became a sales rep for them and was delighted with the pleasure of representing Deviation at the 2017 SIA Snow Show. Nick obviously showed a passion for the sport and a bond with those who practice it. He was more than happy to tell me all about Deviation’s missions... Read More

I’m a very engaged father, my kids mean the world to me—and they’re very different. My son is like a little version of me and my daughter is a firecracker, full of vigor. My son got involved in a junior target shooting program here in Boulder. He really enjoyed it but it was quickly getting expensive so to help subsidize it, I founded Arete Arms. We specialize in selling the top 1% of precision fire arms and optics with concierge service, selection and support. I love to tell anyone about the true sporting behind target shooting. Shooting a pie sized target, a mile away is a big math problem... Read More

“For me, the connection between nature and beer was very natural. I’m a mountain biker, skier, camper… and my business plan spoke to that. We produce and sell craft beer for outdoor enthusiasts and [a can] is the best was to take a beer with you while enjoying nature; it’s compact, can be crushed after use, and recycled. And from the beginning, we have tried to be sustainable—we are FSC certified, we have a high efficiency boiler, and buy wind turbine credits to be 100% wind powered… [The environment] isn’t better off with business, but it is our duty to be responsible.”   Matt... Read More

Maddie and Emma grew up together in Telluride, Colorado. They both came out to CU in 2014 to start they’re college career. The two of them are both in love with Boulder, but still say that Telluride truly has their hearts. They both love the mountain, the town, and the people. Apparently, Telluride folks are their own types. The girls claim that they can almost tell immediately when someone is from their hometown. The girls make sure to go back home and visit as often as they can. They like to go back home and get in as many days as they can at their home mountain during ski season. They... Read More

Hector is a freshman engineering student at the University of Colorado Boulder. He is a Colorado native and grew up in Colorado Springs. Hector came out to CU with a positive mindset and has had nothing but fun. He does admit that being an engineering student has its own challenges, but he is determined to conquer all of them. Hector is a member of the CU Men’s volleyball team. He’s a starting outside hitter as a freshman on the team. He says he’s made priceless friendships through the team, and would do his freshman year over again the same exact way if he could.  Read More

Jesse is originally from Boulder, but doesn’t reside in the city anymore. He does come back to visit though. I talked with him at the SIA snow show where he was representing Soulmotion – a snowboarding and surfing company. Jesse was playing the didgeridoo and wowing all the industry reps that walked by. He started to attract an audience in no time, and was even teaching people how to play. He taught breathing techniques and offered his own tips and tricks, all while still entertaining a crowd. Who knows, maybe he’ll spend a day on Pearl Street next time he’s in Boulder.  Read More

Some people shy away from cameras – others jump in front of them. Peter Hurley, a world-renowned headshot photographer, has put his own spin on this. He believes that a good portrait requires that the camera doesn’t mess with the subject, but that the subject messes with the camera. Once someone loses sight of the insecurities provoked by the camera, they start to perform for it. People start to play with the camera. They stare into it as if they were playing head games. They treat it as if it were a person looking at them – a person they want to make an impression on. These two girls were... Read More

I could tell Mike was going to have a strong character from the moment I saw him. He was standing behind his hot dog stand on Pearl Street talking tirelessly to each one of his customers. On top of those conversations, Mike was constantly engaged with two of his buddies that had also set up shop with him. Except those two gentlemen just seemed to be keeping him company for the mean time. I introduced myself to Mike and the other two gentlemen asking if I could have a moment of their time. They all happily agreed and immediately engaged me about what I was there to do. I had more or less just... Read More

Rob is originally from San Diego, but grew up in Singapore. He studies integrative physiology at CU and is also an opposite hitter for CU Men’s Volleyball. Rob told me that he never took himself to be a natural athlete, but he has always loved to compete. He started playing volleyball in eighth grade when he was living in Singapore. After his senior year of high school, he came back to the U.S. to be a Buff. During his first year playing for CU, the team was lacking structure and struggling financially. Today, they are at Colorado Mesa University competing for a conference championship and a... Read More

Matt is an instructor in the Technology, Arts and Media (TAM) Program at CU Boulder. His latest pursuit challenges the idea of a controller in the world of video games. This April, Matt and several of his colleagues will be hosting what he calls the “Alt-cade”, an alternative-control gaming arcade hosted in the Black Box Theater of the ATLAS Institute on CU’s campus. Matt’s alternative-control game is a “location based video game” focusing on “the monotony of the workplace.” In the game, the user will physically carry out tasks and complete objectives with two other players in... Read More

Jenae is a kennel tech at Indian Peaks Veterinary Hospital here in Boulder. She cares for all types of animals – taking them out for walks, cleaning them, feeding them etc. She started working there this past January. When I asked her why she took the job, she told me that it was because of her love for animals. Jenae grew up on a farm here in Colorado and has been surrounded by animals her whole life. Currently, she’s living in Boulder and studying at CU, but her current apartment doesn’t allow tenants to have pets. Thankfully, she gets her fix at work.  Read More

Ben sees Boulder as the perfect place for his current endeavor: InstaMarch – The Imaginary Jobs Program. He told me: “The purpose of InstaMarch is that I want to get people all around the country doing their own micro-demonstrations on whatever issues they feel are important. And, I’m offering free mentorships – I’m a computer engineering teacher. So, I’m offering free mentorships in social media, computer programming, organizational design – all sorts of things created around these protests. Anybody can do it – left or right – but I have some certain terms for anybody doing... Read More

Every face has its own story, but this one tells two. This is a true face of Boulder, Colorado. A face that can always be found downtown. A face that has its own spirit and lives as part of another. A face that really is a window to the soul. This isn’t only the face of a man wise beyond his years; this is part of Boulder’s collective, figurative “face”. A character that gives Boulder some of its own character. This face tells a story of the people who live here. People who are creative, active, and appreciative. People with depth. People who welcome creations such as this one into the... Read More

Sean is a juggler, student, musician and traveler. He has been juggling for two or three years now. “I initially got into it for the music scene,” Sean said. He told me he “was playing a lot of gigs that attracted jugglers,” and that’s what initially peaked his interest. Now, years later, Sean juggles daily. He told me that he tries to aim for at least thirty minutes to an hour of practice each day. I got it out of him that he does indeed juggle fire, ladies and gentlemen. However, he said it was much easier to practice when he was living in New Zealand where the climate was moister.... Read More

Austin is currently studying aerospace engineering at CU Boulder and dreams of becoming an astronaut in the next twenty years. He’s three years deep in his studies and his passion for engineering has only grown. He decided to leave his small town Tecumseh, Michigan to attend such a highly regarded university. He said he wanted to go somewhere new and do something important. Austin enjoys hiking, snowboarding, soccer, and making music. He has his own Soundcloud account and has been releasing music for five years. He started making beats around the age of fifteen in his parents’ basement.... Read More

Just by looks, you might never guess that Mark and Drew are monks in training. The two monks-to-be came to Boulder to spread their ideals far and wide. Both of the young men practice Bhakti Yoga, a sort of spiritual subdivision of the Hindu religion. As soon as I saw them, I recognized the welcoming look in their eyes. I must say, they were the happiest people I’d talked to all day. They were genuinely excited to share and talk with new people. That’s something you don’t see too often anymore. In the age of the smartphone, it was nice to meet two excited, genuine, young men. Good luck with... Read More

I caught Jake at a good time. Not only a momentarily good time, but a good time in life. He says he’s really happy with where he is at right now. His biggest worries at the moment are finding a part time job and keeping up with his schoolwork. On his off days he enjoys playing guitar and taking on whatever challenge life throws his way. Jake hopes his future is filled with lots of travel and new cultural experiences. One day he hopes to relearn Spanish and live in Mexico for a couple of months. Then he hopes to fit New Zealand in sometime too. But for now, Jake said, “Boulder is doing me just... Read More

Meet Diana. She’s a CU Buff from Westminster, Colorado. After spending five weeks at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia last summer, Diana decided she wanted to attend school somewhere close to home. The humidity alone was enough to send her back to Colorado. She told me she likes to visit home a couple of times every month so she can be with her family… and take advantage of the delicious home cooked meals of course. Diana is now studying to be a graphic designer. In fact, I caught up with her just after she’d finished designing a movie poster in class.  Read More

Nate is an avid runner here in Boulder. He is currently a junior studying astrophysics at CU. After his studies, Nate puts every ounce of his leftover energy towards progressing his passion. To him, running is more than a sport – it’s a lifestyle. Unfortunately, he recently suffered a couple of injuries skiing in Summit County. Nate left the mountain with torn ligaments in his arm and ankle that day. That’s not keeping him from training though; he still finds a way around those obstacles to keep in shape. He follows a strict diet to make sure his body is in tip-top shape and also trains... Read More
