Ab Series From Hell

April 28th, 2015

Those of you who have attended my Work Your Assets classes are all too familiar with my Ab Series.  And while I have several abs series that I like to teach (muwahahaha), this is THE Ab Series–not the Brazilian or the Half Rollback Series or the 5 Part Series.  This is the Split Leg Ab Series.  All ten segments of it (yes, I have increased it from 9 to 10 parts–trust me!  You’ll love it! Plus, ten just feels like a nice even number.)  Reps for each segment are up to you.  If you are starting out, maybe try 3 reps of each part on each side and eventually work your way... Read More

Starting Anew in Spring

April 14th, 2015

Ahh, sunshine, blue skies and blessed warmth. Tulips, robins and breezy dress-wearing collegians bear witness to the arrival of springtime. We finally peel off our jeans and sweaters, replacing them with shorts, tank tops, and skirts. But then the truth is revealed, often harshly. We come face to face with the fact that we ignored our body in the winter while its layers were hidden under outer layers of fleece and down. New Year’s resolutions have long since been forgotten and winter habits have taken their toll. Fortunately, spring is still a great time to begin a new exercise program. But... Read More

Johanna Voss: Nutrition Coach and Your New BFF

April 7th, 2015

If hummingbirds came in human form, they’d look like nutrition coach, Johanna Voss. Her boundless energy and passion infect those around her—so much so that it’s not until later that you realize you were excitedly talking about chia seeds for the past two hours, and it was actually interesting. Hailing from the East Coast, Johanna is self-described as a “half marathoner, nutrition junkie, bookstore dweller, tea latte drinker, adventure-seeker [and] world traveler who is fluent in Spanish and has a healthy dose of curiosity.” She specializes in nutrition for female runners looking to improve... Read More

Whatthehellasana, or How I Learned to Love Yoga

March 31st, 2015

I’m going to let you in on a little secret…when I first started yoga back in 2000, I hated it. I mean, I really despised it. What the f*#k is a Sun Salutation, and why the f*#k do I have to do so many of them? And why does that guy next to me sound like Darth Vader having an asthma attack? Why are they chanting—do they even know what they’re saying? Are we singing now? Yep, we’re singing—why are we singing? Each time I tried a class or VHS (yep, dating myself here), I finished the practice feeling dissatisfied, and even angry. I’m not sure why I stuck with it. My stubbornness is... Read More

Inspiring Fitness at Inspired Athletic Movement

March 24th, 2015

In a health-conscious city packed with elite athletes, a regular visit to the gym can quickly turn into an intimidating event as you suffer through a grueling Spin class next to an Olympic triathlete who’s barely glistening after her ‘rest day’ workout. For some, this can be inspiring, but for others, this can be the final straw in ending their workouts for good. But before you throw in the figurative sweat towel, maybe it’s time to try one more place—a quiet facility that’s clean and open—a gym where you’ll be encouraged to work your way to the best shape of your life, but without... Read More

Truth, Thighs and Orgasms

March 18th, 2015

In the words of the great philosophers, Salt-N-Pepa, let’s talk about sex… Sex is, and should be, fun. If it isn’t <insert PSA>, GET OUT—and I mean right now. It doesn’t change; things will stay bad—get out. Sex is and should be fun, respectful, not painful. It can be adventurous, playful, passionate, and even funny at times, but above all, a good time. And outside of adding life to your years, sex can add years to your life. It’s good for you! A romp in the sack can be decent exercise. A vigorous session can burn anywhere from 2-5 calories a minute, depending on your sex and... Read More
