Campus and Gender Binaries

June 5th, 2015

This past year, as a CU student, I have been witness to many changes on campus; all of which are good, progressive changes. Polly McLean, a professor in the Advertising school at CU created and teaches a class called Gender, Race, Class and Sexuality in Popular Culture. This class allows students to explore the modern world of popular culture through media. By doing so, students learn about the gender binaries that have forever dominated the way in which females and males are classified and identified. However, this past year has brought about massive changes in relation to binaries. In the news... Read More

Loans, Loans and More Loans.

May 22nd, 2015

How to deal with the stress of paying for you own school.  The thought of future debt is a stress that builds on students like an unstoppable load of bricks. Some days are easier to accept this thought, while other days render the heavy burden and fear of debt. Although this fear is rightful and understandable, it is also a necessary fear that is unchangeable for most students who must take out student loans in order to pay for their own college. Paying for school by yourself is an accomplishment all on its own. Some days, I know that I want to throw my arms in the air and ask, “why me?”... Read More

School’s Out! Create a Summer Checklist

May 15th, 2015

It’s finally here! Summer: The time of year in which students celebrate their successes in the classroom by exploring the various activities and adventures that await them. For students, the summer can be a time to network and expand the resume. The University of Colorado, Boulder offers various outlets that provide internship and job opportunities. Groups have been created on Facebook by students that allow the members of the group to post about opportunities that they hear about. It’s easy to join these groups – simply click “join” when entering the page, and just... Read More

One Thing All Students Should Do

May 8th, 2015

It may come off as cheesy, as obvious even, but no matter the connotation of this simple phrase, it is the one thing that all students should do: Be present. Last week in my Literary Analysis class, one student expressed her views on entropy – how could everything, all life and all matter, be pulled towards chaos? Another student in this same class explained that out of every class taken at the University of Colorado, this particular class was the only one that she felt completely engaged in. The downfall within today’s society is that everyone, especially students, are constantly... Read More

Winding Down

April 24th, 2015

It’s hard to believe that another year at CU is coming to an end. With finals around the corner, it’d hard to see the finish line. Think about it this way: There is only one week left of classes, and let’s be real, the last week before finals is all about winding down. Before finals it’s important to find ways to calm and find at least some sort of Zen in the chaos of finals, which for students is a combination of stress, anxiety and nervousness. Around campus though, there are various ways to contrast the chaos with relaxation. Here is a list of the various ways in which students can parallel... Read More

Meanwhile on Campus…

April 10th, 2015

On Monday, April 6, the CU Creative Writing Association with support from the CU Cultural Event Board and the CU English Department collaborated to put on a reading and panel featuring three talented and inspirational poets. The show was titled Code Switching and Recoding Language, in which the three presenters spoke powerful words and shared  images that depicted the struggles that people who break the societal binaries face. These performers highlighted the various issues of oppression that stem from the lack of acceptance, expressed stereotypes and general lack of knowledge and education that... Read More

Buffaloes & Social Media

April 3rd, 2015

The use of social media has increased dramatically over the last decade. Our use of smartphones has allowed for mobile marketing and advertising, application creation and innovation, and, on a more individual level, sharing, connecting and expressing. The mobile universe has come to mean community – a worldwide community yes, but also the opportunity for smaller – and a more specific – community. Popular apps such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have allowed CU students to join in on the web of inter-connectivity in the CU community. On Facebook every class has their own Facebook... Read More

Creating Spring Break – And That’s A Wrap!

March 27th, 2015

Us Buffaloes seem to be creative in establishing a spring break plan; or lack thereof. It seems that many of us have moved away from the pre-determined vacations, and instead, built our own maps. The exciting thing about building a “map”, is that plans can be limitless. You can begin in Boulder and head to Lake Tahoe, California, but on the way, stop in Moab to climb the Arch…and maybe in Vegas on the drive home. Why would we need all-inclusive when we have our own imaginations? These Buffs have ventured outside of the so-called “typical” spring break locations and... Read More

It’s Break Time!

March 20th, 2015

With Spring Break beginning, student brace themselves for a week of school-free enjoyment. This relieving of class time though, is fronted by midterms and project deadlines. How exactly do CU students celebrate their week of relaxation and relieving of the school time blues? Whether it be pitching a tent or stepping into an all-inclusive resort, us Buffs know how to Spring Break. Elle Donovan, although not a Buffalo, came across the chance of a lifetime this spring break: The chance to travel to the Bahamas, for an all-inclusive, totally paid for, spring break. The catch? Elle, a Junior at the... Read More
